Chapter 1 - The Midnight Bleach

The bathroom of the executive dormitory smelled heavily of ammonia and burning keratin. I stood in front of the illuminated vanity mirror, watching the thick, viscous purple paste drip down the strands of my hair. My reflection was distorted by the steam, but I could clearly see the malicious grin of my stepsister, Victoria, lingering in the doorway like a Cheshire cat.
“A bit aggressive for a routine touch-up, don't you think, Chloe?” Victoria purred, leaning against the doorframe with a glass of sparkling water in her hand. Her designer silk robe whispered against the tile floor. “Though, given how dull your natural chestnut hair has always looked, maybe a total strip-down is what you need for the corporate gala tomorrow.”
I didn't turn around. I kept my eyes fixed on my own face, watching the chemical reaction take place.
Victoria thought she was being clever. Three hours earlier, while I was downstairs in the firm’s data room pulling final quarterly audits, she had snuck into my private suite and swapped my gentle, organic deep-conditioner with an industrial-grade salon bleach mixed with a destabilizing developer meant to destroy hair follicles. Her intention was simple, cruel, and juvenile: she wanted my hair to chemically burn off in chunks or turn a sulfurous, patchy white overnight, ensuring that when I walked into tomorrow’s partnership gala—where the new managing director would be announced—I would look like a haggard, prematurely aged old woman, utterly humiliated in front of Manhattan's financial elite.
“You’ve always been so obsessed with appearances, Victoria,” I said, my voice eerily calm, cutting through the hum of the bathroom exhaust fan.
“Presentation is everything in our world, sweet sister,” Victoria laughed, taking a slow sip of her water. “And tomorrow, all eyes will be on me. Especially since our dear father’s firm is finally choosing a sole successor.”
She turned on her heel and sauntered down the hallway, her manicured laughter echoing mockingly against the walls.
The moment the front door of her suite clicked shut, I reached out and turned off the tap. I grabbed a towel, but I didn't cry. I didn't panic. I watched as the timer on my phone hit zero.
I stepped into the glass shower enclosure and turned the cold water on full blast.
As the freezing torrent washed away the caustic chemicals, heavy clumps of hair slid down my shoulders and swirled into the drain. My heart hammered against my ribs, but my mind remained cold and sharp. I grabbed a wide-toothed comb and pulled it through the remaining strands.
When I stepped back out of the shower and looked into the mirror, the transformation was complete. The bleach had completely stripped every molecule of pigment from my hair, leaving behind a stark, brilliant, crystalline white. But because of the specific chemical blend she used, it didn't fry into frizz; it dried into a sleek, platinum-ice cascade that fell sharply past my shoulders, contrasting violently against my pale skin and dark, piercing eyes.
I looked at my reflection for a long, silent minute.
Victoria wanted to make me look like an old woman. She wanted me to cower in shame, hide in my room, and surrender the partnership to her on a silver platter.
A slow, razor-sharp smile touched the corners of my mouth.

“No, Victoria,” I whispered to the empty room. “I’m not going to hide. I’m going to make this color legendary.”
