Chapter 4 - Unearthing the Ledger

The silence in the executive conference room was so absolute you could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents overhead.
Arthur Sterling dropped the papers onto the table, his hands trembling violently. He looked between Victoria and me, the realization of what his favorite daughter had been doing behind his back finally crashing down on him.
“Victoria,” our father whispered, his voice cracking with disbelief. “Is this true? Have you been pulling capital from the subsidiary accounts?”
“Don't listen to her, Dad!” Victoria shrieked, panic finally cracking through her polished armor. She lunged forward, pointing a manicured finger at my chest. “She’s fabricating these audits! She manipulated the board using cheap parlor tricks and media stunts! You can’t let her take the firm!”
“It’s not a trick, Victoria. It’s math,” I said coldly, walking around the table until I stood right beside her.
I opened another section of my portfolio, revealing a thick stack of printed wire transfers, offshore shell company registries, and forged signature logs.
“For the past eighteen months, while you were busy playing society queen and positioning yourself for this succession, you quietly diverted nearly twelve million dollars in corporate research funds into a private holding account registered in the British Virgin Islands,” I stated clearly, my voice carrying the lethal precision of an executioner. “An account under the name Vance Holdings Ltd.—the exact same shell company you used to buy your Hamptons estate last summer.”
Victoria staggered backward, her hip bumping against the edge of the mahogany table. All the color drained from her face, leaving her looking hollowed out and desperate.
“You... you hacked my private files,” she breathed, her voice trembling.
“I didn't have to hack anything,” I replied smoothly. “When you leave your corporate password written on a sticky note under your office keyboard because you think everyone around you is too stupid to check, you invite an audit.”
Arthur slumped back into his leather chair, holding his head in his hands. “My God, Victoria... prison terms for corporate fraud... you could bring down the entire family name.”
“She won't bring down the family name,” I said, looking down at my trembling stepsister with a gaze devoid of pity. “Because I am going to restructure the firm quietly, absorb the losses, and ensure the SEC never sees these files—on one strict condition.”
Victoria’s head snapped up, a desperate sliver of hope flashing in her eyes. “What... what condition?”
“You resign from Sterling & Vance immediately,” I commanded, my voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute authority. “You pack your office by sundown, you hand over every key card, every vehicle, and every asset purchased with corporate funds, and you catch a one-way flight to our European estate. You will never set foot in the New York financial district again.”
“You can’t banish me!” Victoria cried out, the reality of her total defeat finally setting in. “I am a Sterling!”
May you like
“You were a Sterling,” I corrected her quietly, turning away and walking toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked the glittering Manhattan skyline. “Now, you’re just history.”
