Chapter 8 - Society’s Judgment

By the end of the week, the story had broken across every major news network in the country.

*“TYCOON’S MOTHER ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD SCAM: GRANDDAUGHTER FOUND STARVING IN HOTEL GARBAGE DUMP.”*

The headlines were merciless. The high society circles of Manhattan—the very people Victoria Sterling had spent decades curating relationships with—instantly dropped her name like burning coal. Invitations were rescinded, charity boards voted unanimously to strip her name from their benefactor plaques, and her brother, Uncle Arthur, hastily resigned from his senatorial subcommittee amid inquiries into campaign donations tied to Victoria’s shell accounts.

Inside her holding cell at the Manhattan Detention Complex, Victoria sat alone on a steel cot, staring at the gray concrete walls. The pearls were gone. The silk gowns were replaced by an orange jumpsuit. The power she had wielded with such ruthless arrogance had evaporated into thin air.

She had tried to call every influential friend, every judge, every business partner she had ever bailed out or bribed.

Not a single phone call was returned.
