Chapter 7 - The Carlyle Penthouse

The living room of the Carlyle Hotel penthouse was filled with the warm, golden glow of afternoon sunlight streaming through arched windows overlooking Central Park.
On the plush white sofa, six-year-old Sophia was currently wearing a brand-new pink princess dress, completely engrossed in coloring a massive picture book with a box of sixty-four crayons. Next to her sat Clara, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, sipping warm chicken broth prepared by the hotel’s private chef. Her color was returning, and the hollow darkness beneath her eyes had begun to fade.
Marcus walked in quietly, carrying a small, wrapped jewelry box in his hand.
Sophia looked up, her eyes lighting up with unadulterated joy. “Daddy!” she squealed, dropping her crayons and running across the carpet to wrap her arms around his knees.
Marcus scooped her up effortlessly, burying his face in her soft curls and breathing in the scent of strawberry shampoo.
“How is my favorite artist doing today?” Marcus smiled, setting her down gently.
“I drew a picture of you and me fighting a dragon,” Sophia announced proudly, holding up a drawing of a stick-figure knight defeating a snarling lizard.
Clara looked up from the sofa, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. “Marcus... the federal prosecutor called an hour ago. They said... they said Victoria’s assets have been frozen, and restitution is being transferred into a secured trust for Sophia.”
Marcus walked over, sitting on the edge of the sofa beside her, and gently took her hand.
“It’s over, Clara. She’ll never touch you or Sophia again. The courts, the accounts, the estate—everything is in your name now. You never have to worry about a single meal, a single bill, or a single lie ever again.”
Clara leaned her head against his shoulder, a profound sigh of relief escaping her lips. “I thought I’d never feel safe again, Marcus.”

“You are safe,” Marcus whispered, kissing the top of her head. “Forever.”
