Chapter 5 - The Forensic Audit

By Tuesday morning, the war room inside Marcus’s corporate headquarters on Madison Avenue looked like a military command center.

Three elite forensic accountants from Deloitte, alongside Marcus’s personal legal counsel, sat around a massive glass conference table strewn with bank statements, wire transfer receipts, offshore account registries, and property deeds.

Marcus sat at the head of the table, his shirtsleeves rolled up, his eyes bloodshot from a sleepless night spent watching over Clara and Sophia at the Carlyle penthouse. Both of them were now resting safely under 24-hour medical supervision.

“Well?” Marcus asked, his voice flat and dangerous.

Arthur Pendelton, senior partner of the auditing firm, adjusted his glasses and slid a thick red binder across the glass table.

“Mr. Sterling, we’ve traced every single wire transfer from your Swiss accounts over the past four years,” Arthur began, his voice hesitant. “Your mother didn't just hoard the money. She systematically laundered it through three distinct shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands.”

“And where did the funds end up?” Marcus asked.

“Over four point two million dollars was funneled into a private real estate portfolio under her personal name,” Arthur explained, pointing to a highlighted ledger. “She purchased two luxury townhouses in Palm Beach, a vineyard in Napa Valley, and made significant contributions to the mayoral campaign of Arthur Sterling’s committee—your uncle.”

Marcus slammed his hand onto the table, the sharp bang making the accountants jump.

“She starved my daughter to buy a vineyard and fund my uncle’s political ambitions,” Marcus murmured, his voice dangerously low.

“There’s more, sir,” a junior accountant chimed in, sliding a separate document forward. “Three days ago, Victoria Sterling transferred five hundred thousand dollars from those offshore accounts into a private brokerage account managed by Vanguard Wealth Management. She was preparing to liquidate her domestic holdings and flee to Zurich.”

Marcus stood up slowly. He buttoned his suit jacket, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bustling Manhattan traffic below.

“She thinks she can run,” Marcus said coldly. “She doesn't realize that in my world, walls don't stop accountability.”

He turned to his chief security head. “Dante, lock down every airport, private airstrip, and train terminal in the Tri-State area. Freeze all of her credit cards, seize her vehicles, and cut off access to every property she owns. Then, bring her to me.”
