Chapter 6 - The Edge of the Blade

The air in the cargo office went dead silent, save for the faint, distant hum of the warehouse ventilation fans and the ragged breathing of the twins.

Julian’s finger hovered over the trigger of his shotgun, his knuckles turning pure white. The sheer, primal fury roaring through his veins threatened to blind him, but years of high-stakes corporate warfare and survival training kept his hand steady.

"Let the boy go," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly calm register that carried the weight of an executioner. "You want the network keys? I have them right here on the encrypted drive in my pocket. Let the children walk out with their mother first."

The scarred operative chuckled, a harsh, grating sound. "You think I'm an amateur, Sterling? You hand over the drive, then we talk about the kids."

Clara stepped forward from the doorway, her hands empty, her amber eyes locked onto the operative’s face with an unsettling, icy calmness.

"Look at me," Clara said softly, taking another slow step toward the bench.

The operative’s eyes flicked toward her, momentarily distracted by her sudden movement. "Stay back, lady, or I swear—"

"You're not going to kill him," Clara interrupted, her voice cutting through the tension like a glass cutter. "Because if you kill either of my sons, Arthur Sterling isn't going to pay you your severance. And the Vesper Syndicate doesn't leave loose ends for failed mercenaries."

The operative’s face tightened. He hesitated for a fraction of a second—just long enough.

From the shadows behind the ventilation duct above the office door, Marcus dropped silently from the ceiling like a striking panther.

His heavy combat boot slammed directly into the operative’s wrist, sending the tactical knife clattering across the concrete floor with a metallic ring. Before the man could recover, Marcus grabbed him by the collar, hoisted his heavy frame off the ground, and slammed his head against the concrete wall with a sickening crunch.

The operative slumped unconscious to the floor.

"Mommy!" Lucas cried out, breaking into tears as he scrambled off the bench and launched himself straight into Clara’s arms.

"Daddy!" Leo sobbed, running toward Julian, who dropped his shotgun and scooped both boys up into his arms, burying his face in their soft hair as a wave of overwhelming relief crashed over him.

Clara held Lucas tight against her chest, pressing frantic kisses to his forehead, her eyes closed as tears finally spilled over her lower lashes.

"You're safe," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. "Mommy and Daddy are here. You're never going away from us again."
