Chapter 4 - The Vesper Protocol

The underground bunker beneath the old naval yards on the Seattle waterfront was damp, cold, and smelled of stagnant salt water and heavy-grade diesel.
Julian stood at the center of a makeshift tactical operations center lit by the harsh blue glow of six laptop screens. Around him stood Marcus, two veteran intelligence operatives, and a local cyber-forensics specialist named Harris who had spent the last decade tracking black-ops syndicates across the Pacific Northwest.
"The coin isn't just a calling card," Harris explained, tapping a key on his console to pull up an encrypted satellite map of the coastline. "It's a hardware-encrypted USB drive. When Marcus plugged it into our field decoder, it unlocked a direct communication channel."
A harsh electronic tone echoed from the speakers, followed by the sound of heavy static clearing to reveal a distorted, synthesized male voice.
*“Mr. Sterling,”* the voice droned, cold and mechanical. “If you’re hearing this recording, it means your domestic illusion has successfully shattered. The boys are currently residing in a secure, climate-controlled facility outside your jurisdiction.”
Julian stepped up to the console, leaning his hands on the metal table, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "What do you want?"
*“We don't want money, Julian. You and your little auditor have systematically destroyed our financial infrastructure over the past three months. We want the complete source code and decryption keys to the Sterling Global Logistics network—and you are going to hand them over personally.”*
"And if I refuse?" Julian asked.
A chilling pause hung over the speakers before the voice replied: “Then you will receive your sons one finger at a time in a FedEx box by tomorrow morning.”
*Click.*
The transmission terminated.
Silence descended on the bunker. Marcus checked his sidearm, sliding a fresh magazine into the well with a sharp, metallic click.
"It's a trap, boss," Marcus said bluntly. "That communication ping didn't originate from overseas. The routing latency was less than twelve milliseconds. They're broadcasting from within city limits—specifically, the abandoned dry docks at Pier 88."
Clara stepped out from the shadows near the back of the bunker. She had washed the dust and tears from her face, and her amber eyes burned with a cold, terrifying clarity that matched Julian's own.
"Then we go to Pier 88," Clara said, picking up a heavy tactical vest from the equipment rack and sliding it over her shoulders.
Julian turned to her, his jaw tightening. "Clara, no. That's a suicide mission. You stay here with the extraction team."

"My sons were just stolen from my home by monsters who want to cut them to pieces," Clara whispered, stepping right up to Julian until her face was inches from his. "You think I'm going to sit in a bunker and wait for a phone call? We go together, Julian. Always."
