Chapter 3 - The Trap in the Penthouse

The black SUV driven by Marcus cut through the wet Seattle streets like a bullet, running two yellow lights before screeching to a halt outside the private entrance of the Sterling Tower.

Julian and Clara vaulted out of the vehicle before it had even fully settled into park, sprinting through the revolving doors toward the private elevator bank. The digital display above the service lift was flashing red—*CAR 4: OCCUPIED — 32ND FLOOR.*

"Marcus, status!" Julian barked into his comms as they rode the high-speed express lift upward.

"Unknown intruder," Marcus's voice hissed back through the earpiece. "They bypassed the ground-floor security checkpoints by using an encrypted access keycard embedded with a high-level government bypass. My men are sweeping the living quarters now."

The elevator dinged softly, the doors sliding open to reveal the sprawling, high-ceilinged penthouse.

The soft, warm glow of the interior lighting had been replaced by flashing red emergency beacons. The air smelled faintly of burnt copper and ozone—the unmistakable signature of an EMP or high-voltage electronic bypass device.

"Leo! Lucas!" Clara screamed, bolting past the entryway toward the east wing nursery.

"Clara, wait!" Julian shouted, drawing his concealed sidearm and sprinting right behind her.

They burst into the children's wing. The room was empty. The twin toddler beds were rumpled, the blankets tossed aside, and the window leading to the exterior balcony was blown inward, shards of safety glass glittering across the imported wool rug.

Marcus stood near the shattered window, holding a heavy tactical riot shield in one hand and a cracked tablet in the other.

"They're gone, Julian," Marcus said, his voice grim. "Professionals. Ex-military contractor grade. They didn't leave a single forensic footprint except for this."

Marcus held out a small, heavy silver coin resting in the palm of his tactical glove.

Julian stared at it. Stamped into the metal was a familiar, terrifying insignia—a coiled viper wrapped around a double-edged sword.

The crest of the Vesper Syndicate—the international clandestine security network that Arthur Sterling had secretly funded for decades to clean up his corporate and political messes.

Clara dropped to her knees on the shattered glass, her hands trembling as she picked up a small, pink plastic toy truck that Lucas had been holding before they were taken. A quiet, devastating sob tore through her throat, echoing off the high stone walls of the empty room.

Julian knelt beside her, wrapping his arms around her shaking frame, but his eyes were fixed on the silver coin in Marcus's hand.
