Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Corridor

The federal marshals escorted Jonathan out through the private service corridor, his angry protests echoing down the hallway until the heavy fire doors banged shut, cutting off the sound entirely.

Inside the conference room, the remaining board members sat in stunned silence. One by one, they packed their briefcases, muttered polite, hurried excuses, and filed out of the room. Within three minutes, Julian and Clara were left completely alone in the cavernous space.

Julian let out a long, ragged breath, sliding his hands over his face before looking up at Clara.

"That's the last of them," Julian murmured, standing up from his chair and walking around the mahogany table toward her. "The legal foundation is secure. No one can touch us now."

Clara stood up to meet him, but the tension didn't leave her shoulders. She crossed her arms, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the gray Seattle drizzle slicking the asphalt far below.

"It's never really over, Julian," she said softly. "People like Jonathan, like Arthur, like Victoria... they don't just disappear because a judge bangs a gavel. They leave scars in the foundation. And when you build a house on cracked concrete, it doesn't matter how high the walls go—eventually, the cracks find a way to the surface."

Julian stopped inches away from her. He reached out, gently cupping her jaw with his calloused hand, tilting her face up so she had to look into his eyes.

"We survived the orphanage," Julian whispered, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her cheekbone. "We survived twenty years apart. We survived the fires, the lies, and the corporate traps. Nothing is going to tear us apart again, Clara. I swear it to you."

Clara leaned into his touch, closing her eyes for a brief second to absorb his warmth. "I know. But it's not us I'm worried about."

Julian’s expression tightened instantly. "The boys."

"Lucas and Leo are safe in the penthouse with Marcus and the security detail," Clara said, her amber eyes opening to meet his with fierce intensity. "But they're four years old. They've already spent half their lives locked away in nurseries while adults played chess with their identities. I won't let them become targets again."

Before Julian could answer, the encrypted secure phone buzzing inside his breast pocket broke the quiet.

He pulled it out, tapping the screen. It wasn't a standard text or call; it was a high-priority ping routed directly from the penthouse security terminal.

Marcus's voice crackled through the speaker, tight and clipped. "Boss. We have a perimeter breach at the penthouse service elevator. Someone just bypassed the biometric locks using an old master code that hasn't been active since Arthur Sterling was chairman."

Julian’s blood ran cold.
