Chapter 4 - The Queen’s Gambit**

Rain drummed against the reinforced glass windows of the penthouse suite overlooking San Diego’s glittering harbor. Victoria stood by the window, swirling a glass of vintage red wine as she watched the city lights reflect off the wet pavement.
The intercom chimed softly. Her executive assistant’s voice came through.
"Victoria, Mr. Christopher Lawson is downstairs in the lobby. He’s... well, he’s a complete wreck. He’s begging for five minutes of your time."
Victoria took a slow sip of her wine. "Send him up."
Ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors of her private office opened. Christopher stumbled inside. The confident, arrogant CEO who had gloated over the phone weeks ago was entirely gone. His suit was rumpled, his hair unbrushed, and his eyes carried the hollow, frantic desperation of a man who had lost his empire, his family name, and his mind.
"Victoria," he choked out, taking an unsteady step toward her desk. "Please. You have to help me. Vextor Dynamics is frozen. Mother has cut me out of the family trust entirely. And Michelle... Michelle has already packed her bags and tried to flee to Europe once she realized the trust fund was a ghost."
Victoria didn’t turn around immediately. She set her wine glass down, smoothed the lapels of her sharp charcoal blazer, and finally turned to face him. Her expression was completely devoid of anger, pity, or warmth. It was the calm, clinical gaze of a master chess player looking at a pawn that had already been swept off the board.
"You look tired, Christopher," she said evenly.
"I lost everything," he whispered, falling to his knees beside her desk, a pathetic, broken shell of a man. "You were right about everything. I was blind. I was a fool. Please... we were married for five years. Let’s renegotiate the settlement. Let me buy back my shares. I'll give you whatever you want."
Victoria walked around the desk, stopping just a few feet away from him. She looked down at him with an absolute, unyielding composure.
"When you called me on the day of our divorce," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a cool, steady rhythm, "you told me that Michelle gave you what I never could: a son and a daughter. You told me to be happy for you, because you had finally found where you belonged."
Christopher flinched as if struck by lightning.
"You spent years calling me cold," Victoria continued, "because I didn't fawn over your superficial demands, because I focused on building the empire that you so arrogantly claimed as your own. You traded loyalty for a cheap lie, and you used innocent children as weapons to humiliate me."
"I was manipulated," he sobbed, reaching out a trembling hand to grab the hem of her trousers. "Jonathan set me up. Michelle lied to me!"
Victoria stepped back effortlessly, avoiding his touch. "And yet, you signed your own name to the destruction. You brought those babies into your mother’s house, bragging about a bloodline that wasn't even yours. You built your entire house of cards on betrayal, Christopher. Did you really think there wouldn't be a reckoning?"
"What am I supposed to do now?" he cried out into the empty room. "I have no money, no company, no family!"
"You have exactly what you earned," Victoria replied, her voice as hard as diamond. "Nothing."
She turned her back on him and pressed the intercom button. "Security? Please escort Mr. Lawson out of the building. And make sure he understands he is never permitted back on these premises."

Within seconds, two burly security guards entered the office, lifted the sobbing, broken man by his arms, and dragged him out of the room, closing the heavy oak doors behind him with a final, echoing thud.
