Chapter 9 - The Warrant

Officer Miller paused his hand over the keypad, his professional instincts kicking in as he noticed the genuine, unfiltered terror in Amanda’s eyes—and the subtle, cold glare that flashed across Richard’s face when Amanda mentioned the study files.
"Actually, Dr. Sterling," Officer Miller said slowly, stepping back from the pillar. "Given the nature of the allegations regarding a minor, protocol requires us to secure the premises and conduct a welfare check before we transport anyone anywhere."
Richard’s polite, sorrowful facade tightened. The temperature in his voice dropped instantly.
"Officer, I am a respected consulting surgeon at the county medical center," Richard said, his tone turning sharp and authoritative. "You do not have a search warrant to enter my private residence or my personal study."
"I don't need a search warrant to respond to an active domestic endangerment call involving a twenty-month-old child, Doctor," Officer Miller replied coolly, grabbing his radio mic from his shoulder. "Dispatch, send backup and a child protective services unit to the Sterling estate on Miller Road. We have a possible code red."
Richard’s face hardened into stone. He realized his immaculate web of control was unraveling in real-time.
"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Officer," Richard warned softly, his hand sliding slowly toward the inside pocket of his suit jacket.
"Step away from the vehicle, Dr. Sterling! Hands where I can see them!" Officer Miller commanded, drawing his service weapon and leveling it firmly across the hood of his cruiser.
For a terrifying second, nobody moved. The morning wind rustled through the tall pine trees along the driveway. Richard looked at the gun, looked at Amanda holding Leo, and then looked back down the highway as a second distant siren began wailing in the background.
The game was over. He couldn't talk his way out of a federal child welfare audit combined with local police intervention.
With a slow, deliberate movement, Richard raised his empty hands into the air, a dark, chilling smile playing on his lips.
"You think this is the end of the data, Amanda?" Richard whispered quietly enough that only the wind carried his words across the iron bars. "Project Vanguard was never stored on a local hard drive. It was already live-streaming to an external syndicate network the moment you opened the door."
Before Officer Miller could issue another command, backup units arrived in a flurry of flashing red and blue lights, swarming the driveway and placing Richard in handcuffs against the hood of his SUV.
As officers rushed through the unlocked side gate to secure the mansion and retrieve the computer logs from Richard’s study, Amanda finally let out the breath she felt like she had been holding for days.
She collapsed onto the grass beside the cruiser, burying her face in Leo’s soft hair as her son patted her cheek with his tiny hand, whispering his only word:
May you like
"Mama..."
