Chapter 2 - The Silent Witness

The tension in the kitchen was thick enough to carve with a knife. Richard walked slowly toward the island, his movements deliberate and unthreatening, the very picture of a rational husband dealing with an overwrought, exhausted mother.
"Amanda, put the boy down. You're scaring him more with this hysteria than whatever dream woke him up," Richard said softly, reaching out to touch her arm.
Amanda flinched violently away from his hand, stepping back until her spine hit the pantry door. "Don't touch me."
Richard’s hand hung in the air for a second before he slowly withdrew it, sliding it deep into the pocket of his silk robe. A shadow of cold impatience flickered across his eyes, though his voice remained carefully measured.
"You’re being irrational," Richard said, his tone turning clinical. "If you genuinely believe someone broke into this house, placed our son inside an unpowered appliance, and left without tripping the perimeter alarms, then we need to call security. But we both know the smart home system logs every single interior door and motion sensor. Let's check the console together right now."
He turned toward the smart home panel mounted near the back hallway, gesturing for her to follow.
Amanda hesitated. Her mind was racing. Richard was right about one thing: the estate's security system was a fortress. Every door, window, and hallway sensor was monitored 24/7. If an intruder had entered the house, the logs would show it.
Unless... the intruder hadn't come from outside.
"No," Amanda said firmly, shifting Leo tighter against her. "We aren't checking the security logs right now. I'm taking Leo to the guest suite upstairs. We are staying there for the rest of the night."
Richard turned back to face her, his blue eyes narrowing just a fraction. The mild, concerned husband facade slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing something calculating and sharp beneath the surface.
"As you wish, Amanda," Richard said quietly, his voice dropping an octave. "But let’s get one thing straight. You can lock yourself in the guest suite all you like. But do not make baseless accusations you cannot prove. It unbecomes you."
Without another word, Amanda turned and hurried up the stairs, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She locked the heavy oak door of the guest suite behind her, clicked the deadbolt, and slid the antique brass security chain into place.
She collapsed onto the edge of the king-size bed, holding Leo close as the toddler finally drifted into an exhausted, feverish sleep against her chest.
Hours passed in agonizing silence. Outside the tall arched windows, the predawn sky slowly bled from bruised purple to a sickly grey. Amanda didn't sleep a wink. She sat in the darkness, her eyes fixed on the heavy bedroom door.
At 6:30 AM, she heard the muffled sound of Richard’s footsteps in the hallway outside, followed by the front door opening and closing as he left for the hospital.
As soon as his car engine faded down the private driveway, Amanda knew she couldn't just hide upstairs. If Richard had lied about where he was, if he was capable of terrifying their helpless son, then the answers weren't going to be found in the bedroom.

They were going to be found in his private study—the one room in the mansion Richard kept locked twenty-four hours a day.
