Chapter 6 - The Emergency Protocol

"You think you can just lock me away like you did to Leo?" Amanda challenged, her green eyes flashing with fierce defiance even as adrenaline surged through her veins. "The entire estate's backup server syncs every file to an off-site cloud storage locker every six hours. The moment I logged into this terminal, a mirror copy of Project Vanguard was transmitted to my father's legal team."

It was a desperate bluff, a total fabrication born of pure survival instinct, but it hit its mark with devastating precision.

Richard’s confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second. His blue eyes narrowed sharply as he searched her face for any sign of a lie.

"You're bluffing," Richard said, though his voice lacked its previous absolute certainty. "The study’s local network is completely air-gapped from external satellite links."

"Is it?" Amanda challenged, tilting her chin up. "My father is Arthur Sterling. Do you really think he let me marry a brilliant surgeon without installing proprietary data recovery protocols on my personal tablet? Check your server queue, Richard. The upload packet was tagged at 7:14 AM."

Richard released her arm abruptly, spinning around to rush back toward his desk. His fingers flew across the keyboard, pulling up the network diagnostic logs, frantically checking packet routing tables and outbound IP traffic.

It was the opening Amanda needed.

She didn't hesitate. She bolted toward the double doors, slamming her weight against the panic release button embedded in the frame. The heavy deadlocks disengaged with a mechanical clatter, and she threw the door open, sprinting down the hallway toward the nursery.

"Amanda! Stop!" Richard roared from inside the study, realizing the bluff too late as he saw the empty network queue.

She reached the nursery, throwing the door open and scooping Leo out of his playpen. The toddler whimpered, wrapping his arms tightly around her neck as she turned and ran toward the back service staircase that led directly down to the mudroom and the garage.

She couldn't run through the front foyer—it was too open, too exposed.

As she hurried down the narrow wooden steps of the service stairs, she heard the heavy thud of Richard’s footsteps pounding down the main corridor upstairs.

"Amanda! You can't leave this house! The perimeter gates are locked!" his voice echoed through the stairwell, cold and commanding.

She reached the ground floor, bursting into the kitchen just as the smart home console began flashing a harsh red warning light.

*PERIMETER LOCKDOWN ENGAGED. BIOMETRIC EGRESS REQUIRED.*

Richard had locked down the entire compound. The high-voltage iron security gates surrounding the estate were sealed tight, and every exterior door was deadbolted electronically from his master control unit.
