Chapter 1 - Echoes in the Drum

The air inside the master laundry room of the Sterling estate was heavy with the sterile scent of lavender detergent and cold, damp metal. Amanda’s fingers were still trembling as she clutched Leo to her chest. The twenty-month-old toddler was clinging to her neck with a grip so fierce his little knuckles were stark white, his small body wracked with shuddering aftershocks of terror.

When Amanda had first pulled open the heavy glass door of the front-loading washer, the silence had been more deafening than any scream. The drum had been dry, the machine unpowered, but the sight of her only son trapped inside that dark, airtight cylinder had felt like a freefall into a nightmare.

"Who did this to you, baby?" Amanda whispered against his soft brown curls, her voice breaking as she stroked his back.

Leo hadn't spoken words, but his reaction to the dark hallway had been instantaneous and absolute. A silent, frozen terror. And when she uttered Richard’s name, the child's violent trembling had answered for him.

Now, standing in the center of the sprawling, vaulted kitchen, Amanda felt the cold marble floor beneath her bare feet, but it was nothing compared to the ice flooding her veins. Richard Sterling—her husband of three years, a brilliant neurosurgeon whose public persona was defined by gentle hands and a compassionate smile—was upstairs asleep. Or so she had thought.

The single scream she had unleashed moments ago—*RICHARD!*—still seemed to hang in the air like a jagged shard of glass.

Footsteps echoed softly down the sweeping mahogany staircase. Heavy, unhurried, rhythmic.

Amanda turned slowly, shifting Leo onto her right hip while her left hand instinctively gripped the heavy edge of the marble island. Her eyes were fixed on the archway leading to the foyer.

Richard appeared around the corner. He was wearing a charcoal silk robe, his dark hair slightly ruffled from sleep, his striking blue eyes clear and completely devoid of grogginess. He looked at Amanda with a mild, almost academic curiosity, as if she were a resident physician asking an untimely question during a morning shift.

"Amanda?" Richard’s voice was smooth, baritone, and entirely composed. "Good lord, what is the meaning of that racket? Do you have any idea what time it is? I have a complex craniotomy at seven this morning."

Amanda stared at him. The man she had loved, trusted, and built a life with for years suddenly looked like a stranger wearing a tailored human mask.

"Where were you, Richard?" Amanda’s voice was dangerously low, vibrating with a tightly coiled fury.

Richard paused, tilting his head slightly. His eyes flicked down to Leo, who immediately buried his face deeper into the crook of Amanda’s neck, letting out a tiny, stifled whimper. A micro-expression—a fleeting flash of cold irritation—crossed Richard’s face before vanishing behind his clinical smile.

"I was in bed, darling," Richard replied evenly, stepping into the kitchen. "Where else would I be? Did Leo have another nightmare? I told you, toddler night terrors are entirely developmental. Leaving him to cry it out in his room is—"

"He wasn't in his room, Richard," Amanda interrupted, her voice cutting through his smooth explanation like a scalpel. She stepped forward, her eyes locked onto his. "He was in the laundry room. Locked inside the washing machine."

Richard didn't flinch. He didn't gasp, stutter, or drop his gaze. He simply stood there under the recessed kitchen lights, his expression shifting into one of mild, patronizing concern.

"The washing machine?" Richard repeated, shaking his head with a soft, dismissive sigh. "Amanda, listen to yourself. He’s twenty months old. Even if he managed to wander down the hall—which is impressive given the safety gates—he couldn't possibly open a heavy commercial glass hatch, climb inside, and latch it from the inside."

"He didn't latch it from the inside," Amanda whispered, her voice trembling with rising horror. "Someone put him in there."
