Two months later, the glass-walled executive offices on the fiftieth floor of the Hale Tech tower felt worlds away from the damp locker room of the Golden Oak.
The city spread out below us like a living map of light and glass.
I sat at a spacious oak desk, reviewing the financial accessibility reports for our new software initiative—a platform designed to bridge communication gaps for hearing-impaired individuals across corporate workspaces.
The door to my office opened quietly.
Ethan walked in, holding two cups of black coffee. He set one down on my desk, leaning against the edge with a relaxed, confident smile.
“How’s the translation software integration coming along?” Ethan asked, his voice steady and clear, having grown much more comfortable speaking aloud over the weeks of running meetings and working closely with his team.
“Ahead of schedule,” I smiled, looking up from my screen. “We’ve already partnered with three major school districts to implement the accessibility tools for students with hearing impairments. Including my brother’s school.”
Ethan’s eyes softened. He reached across the desk, his fingers brushing mine as he signed simply: I’m proud of you, Mary.
“I’m proud of us,” I corrected him, intertwining my fingers with his.
We didn't need grand speeches or dramatic confrontations anymore. The silence that had once been used as a weapon against him had been shattered, replaced by a language of mutual respect, trust, and shared strength.
