Chapter 10 - The Horizon Ahead

The evening sun was sinking behind the Manhattan skyline, painting the office in brilliant strokes of gold, amber, and violet.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out at the sprawling metropolis where just months ago I had sat on a kitchen floor crying over an eviction notice with $340 in my bank account.

Footsteps approached softly from behind.

Ethan stood beside me, looking out at the same horizon. He slipped his hand into mine, his thumb gently tracing the scars on my knuckles—the physical reminders of long hours of hard work, low-wage jobs, and the relentless fight to survive.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Ethan asked softly.

“I was just thinking about that night at the Golden Oak,” I murmured, leaning my head lightly against his shoulder. “If I hadn't taken that table... if I had just kept my head down and ignored you like everyone else... where would we be right now?”

Ethan smiled, turning to look at me, his dark eyes reflecting the fading sunset.

“You never keep your head down when someone needs a voice, Mary,” he signed, his fingers moving with practiced grace. “That’s why I fell in love with you in the first place.”

My breath caught slightly. It was the first time he had spoken those specific words aloud, though my hands had read them in his eyes a hundred times before.

I smiled, squeezing his hand tightly, ready for whatever chapter came next. We weren't hiding behind silence anymore. We were writing our own story, word by word, sign by sign, right out in the open.
