Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Benefactors

Senator Richard Sterling’s face turned the color of ash.
For the first time since walking into the room, absolute panic flickered in his eyes. He lunged toward the door, but Logan stepped squarely into his path, blocking the exit with the solid, immovable weight of a man who had nothing left to lose.
“Get out of my way!” Sterling hissed, his polished veneer completely dissolving into rage.
The door to exam room two swung open wide.
Standing in the hallway wasn't just Sarah or a receptionist. It was Marcus Vance, flanked by two federal agents in tactical gear, their body armor emblazoned with Department of Justice insignia.
Marcus held up a small audio receiver, a grim satisfaction playing across his face.
“We got it all, Senator,” Marcus said, his voice ringing with absolute finality. “Direct intimidation of a key federal witness and accessory-after-the-fact conspiracy to obstruct a human trafficking investigation. That’s a guaranteed ten-year minimum federal sentence.”
Sterling swallowed hard, looking desperately down the hallway, but escape was impossible. The federal agents stepped forward, taking him firmly by both arms and clicking steel handcuffs around his wrists.
“You’re destroying the foundation of this state,” Sterling spat as they dragged him past Marcus. “You don't know who’s backing us!”
“We’re about to find out,” Marcus replied coldly as the senator was escorted out the back service exit.
Logan let out a long, slow breath, leaning against the dental chair. The tension that had gripped his shoulders for weeks finally began to melt away.
“Good catch on the intercom recorder,” Marcus said, clapping Logan on the shoulder. “That sealed the deal with the federal magistrate. Warrants for Sterling’s financial assets were signed five minutes ago.”
“How is Maya?” Logan asked, turning the conversation back to what mattered most.
“She’s doing incredible,” Marcus smiled warmly. “She’s been placed with a wonderful, vetted foster family right here in Columbus. A family with a big backyard, a golden retriever, and no dark secrets in the basement. She starts school next Monday.”
Logan felt a profound, radiant peace settle deep into his soul. The ghosts of the past—the memory of little Toby, the endless nights of regret—finally felt like they had been laid to rest.
“Can I go see her?” Logan asked.

“Only if you bring her favorite strawberry toothpaste,” Marcus laughed. “She insists that only Dr. Miller is allowed to touch her teeth from now on.”
