The Secret in the Lead Apron / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Raid on Oak Ridge Lane

The sun was dipping below the horizon by the time three unmarked police cruisers and a tactical transport van turned onto the long, winding gravel drive of the Oak Ridge Estate.

The property was surrounded by a ten-foot wrought-iron fence topped with razor wire and security cameras that swept back and forth across the overgrown lawns. It looked less like a home and more like an abandoned compound.

Logan rode in the passenger seat of Marcus’s cruiser, having insisted on coming along. Maya was safe back at the station with a specialized social worker, but the image of her bruised arms and the words scrawled on the lead apron stayed burned in his mind.

“SWAT is breaching the side gate now,” Marcus announced over the police radio, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. “Remember, Logan, stay behind the second unit. If Arthur Vance is half as unstable as I think he is, this place could be rigged.”

The cruiser crunched to a halt behind an armored tactical vehicle.

Flashing red and blue lights painted the peeling white paint of the grand southern-style mansion in eerie, pulsing colors. Shouts echoed across the damp evening air.

“Clear the foyer!”

“Basement stairwell secure! Move, move, move!”

Marcus drew his service weapon, unlatching his door. “Stay here, Logan.”

“Not a chance,” Logan replied, stepping out into the cold night air behind the detective.

They rushed past the broken front double doors. The interior of the mansion smelled of damp earth, old paper, and antiseptic cleaner. The once-luxurious furnishings were draped in white dust sheets, giving the grand hallway the appearance of a mausoleum.

At the end of the main corridor, a pair of heavy iron doors leading down to the basement hung off their hinges, splintered by a tactical breaching charge.

A heavy, stale wave of air billowed up from the darkness below.

Logan and Marcus descended the concrete steps one by one, their flashlights cutting bright beams through the swirling dust.

What they found in the basement made Logan’s breath catch in his throat.
