Chapter 1 - Protocol Red

The air inside the Spring Family Open House shifted from a festive weekend celebration to something electric and dangerous.
Veronica Vance’s manicured fingers tightened into fists at her sides. The polite, aristocratic smile she had worn since walking through the doors of Bright Smiles Dentistry had completely vanished, replaced by a cold, hardened glare that didn't belong on the face of a loving mother.
“You have no idea what you’re doing, Dr. Miller,” Veronica said, her voice dropping into a low, menacing hiss. “Open that door right now, or I will have your dental license revoked before the sun sets today. My husband is on the state medical board. We know people.”
Logan Miller didn’t flinch. He stood firmly between Veronica and the imaging room door, his broad shoulders blocking her path. Behind the glass panel, eight-year-old Maya stood trembling, clutching the heavy lead apron against her chest with both hands. The words she had scrawled with the black marker—*SHE’S NOT MY MOM*, DON’T LET HER TAKE ME BACK, TO THE BASEMENT—were seared into Logan's retinue like brands.
Ten years ago, a little boy named Toby had asked him if he had to go home, and Logan had let him walk out that door. Toby hadn't survived the week.
*Not again,* Logan thought. Never again.
“Sarah is calling Marcus right now, Mrs. Vance,” Logan said, his voice entirely steady, masking the adrenaline hammering against his ribs. “And Marcus happens to be Detective Marcus Vance of the Columbus Police Department’s Special Victims Unit. Coincidentally, also a last name you share. Care to explain the family tree?”
Color vanished from Veronica’s face. The mention of Detective Marcus Vance hit her like a physical blow. For a fraction of a second, panic flared in her eyes—not fear for Maya, but the sheer terror of being cornered.
Inside the imaging room, Maya’s small hand reached up. She didn't have the marker anymore, but she pointed frantically toward the ceiling vent above her head, then pressed her palms flat against the glass, mouthing a single word over and over: Help.
“She’s delusional!” Veronica shrieked, lunging forward with a speed that caught Logan off guard. She shoved against his chest with surprising force, her nails scraping his lab coat. “She has severe behavioral issues! She makes things up! Open this door!”
“Stay back!” Logan commanded, stepping up to shield the glass.
Down the hallway, parents with children stopped playing with their balloon animals. The soft dental pop music playing overhead felt surreal against the mounting tension. Hygienists and dental assistants backed away toward the reception desk, whispering among themselves, sensing that something terrible and hidden was breaking out into the open.
Then, the heavy front glass doors of the clinic pushed open.
A tall man in a dark trench coat walked in, his badge flashing silver in the fluorescent light. Detective Marcus Vance strode into the clinic with the heavy, unhurried tread of a man who smelled trouble a mile away.

“Alright,” Marcus said, his deep voice carrying across the quiet waiting room. “Somebody tell me why my precinct just got a Code Red emergency call from a dental office.”
