Chapter 7 - The Threat in the Waiting Room

Three weeks after the raid, Bright Smiles Dentistry reopened its doors to the public.

The Spring Family Open House had been rescheduled, though the atmosphere was noticeably more subdued. Parents whispered when they walked past Dr. Logan Miller’s chair, and local news outlets had hailed him as a quiet hero for his role in uncovering the Oak Ridge trafficking ring.

Logan was cleaning his instruments between appointments when Sarah buzzed him on the intercom.

“Dr. Miller, you have a visitor in examination room two. No appointment, but… well, you’ll want to see them.”

Logan frowned, removing his surgical gloves, tossing them into the bin, and walking down the corridor.

He pushed open the door to exam room two.

Sitting in the dental chair wasn't a patient. It was a well-dressed man in an expensive charcoal suit, holding a silver-knobbed walking cane. His hair was silver-gray, perfectly combed, and his expression was a mask of polite, chilling indifference.

“Dr. Logan Miller, I presume,” the man said smoothly, his voice carrying the refined cadence of old money and private clubs.

Logan crossed his arms, leaning against the doorframe. “I’m afraid our practice is fully booked today. If you need a cleaning, you’ll have to schedule through the front desk. Who are you?”

The man stood up, smoothing his jacket lapel. “My name is Senator Richard Sterling. And I suggest you listen very carefully to what I have to say.”

Logan’s muscles tightened. Senator Sterling. The name flashed in his mind from the financial ledger Marcus had decrypted—one of the primary political benefactors listed under Arthur Vance’s shell corporation.

“You’re trespassing in a private medical office, Senator,” Logan said evenly, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. “I think you should leave before I call Detective Vance.”

Sterling offered a thin, humorless smile. “Marcus is a good cop. Too good for his own good. But he’s chasing ghosts, Dr. Miller. Oak Ridge was a private family matter gone slightly off the rails. Arthur Vance was a disturbed man acting independently. The federal prosecutors will realize that once the proper political adjustments are made.”

“Is that a threat?” Logan asked, stepping closer.

“It’s a professional courtesy,” Sterling corrected softly. “You’re a respected dentist. You have a wonderful practice, a bright future, a community that loves you. It would be a terrible shame if an unfortunate accident occurred. A slip in the parking lot. A sudden tax audit that ruined your business. People who look too closely at things that don't concern them often find themselves falling off very high ledgers.”

Logan stared at the politician. For a second, he felt the old familiar coldness creeping back into his chest—the fear that paralyzed him ten years ago when Toby died.

Then he thought of Maya. He thought of her standing behind the glass of the imaging room, pressing her bruised hands against the window, begging for someone to care.

Logan smiled—a cold, fearless smile that made the senator’s confident facade crack for a fraction of a second.

“Senator,” Logan said quietly, “you’re standing in the exact same room where a little girl stood three weeks ago and proved that courage is stronger than intimidation.”

Logan reached behind his back, pressing the recording button on his pocket voice recorder.

“You might want to check your audio settings before you finish your speech,” Logan added smoothly. “Because Detective Vance’s unit is listening to every single word through the clinic intercom.”
