Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

A year to the day since Julian had first stepped back onto the cobblestones of Rue de la Paix, a quiet celebration was held inside Mateo’s Kitchen.

There were no billionaire executives, no flashing cameras, and no corporate press releases. Just a warm room filled with laughter, the rich aroma of roasted lamb and rosemary, and people from all walks of life sharing a table together.

Julian stood near the back of the dining room, wearing a simple dark sweater, watching Mateo work behind the counter with the same tireless energy he had possessed decades ago.

Mateo looked up, caught Julian’s eye, and gestured with his silver-handled spatula toward a fresh plate sitting on the counter.

Julian walked over, leaning against the marble.

“For you, my friend,” Mateo said softly, his amber eyes shining with deep affection. “On the house.”

Julian laughed—a deep, resonant sound of pure contentment—and picked up the plate. He walked over to a corner table where a young boy, caked in light dust from the road and shivering slightly in an oversized jacket, sat staring down at the empty space before him with hungry, cautious eyes.

Julian pulled out the chair across from the boy, sat down, and slid the steaming plate of food toward him.

The boy looked up, startled, searching Julian’s face for anger or dismissal. Instead, he found only warmth and a profound, shared understanding.

Julian smiled gently, echoing the exact words that had altered the trajectory of his universe so many years ago:

“Here—eat. Today’s on me.”

The boy’s eyes widened, a fragile spark of hope blooming in his chest as he picked up his fork. And as Julian watched him take his first bite, he knew that the circle of kindness was unbroken—stretching infinitely forward, carrying light into the darkest corners of the world.
