Chapter 8 - The Price of Cruelty

The federal marshals guided a sobbing, hysterical Beatrice Sterling out of the dining hall, the heavy oak doors slamming shut behind them with a definitive, echoing thud.

Silence settled back over the room. The remaining board members sat back down in their chairs, staring down at their polished silverware, too terrified to speak.

Evelyn remained seated at the head of the table. She looked around the room at the wealthy elites who had sneered at her clearance-rack dress just twelve hours earlier. Now, they were waiting for her permission to breathe.

“The board is dissolved,” Evelyn announced, her voice calm, clear, and commanding. “Every charitable tax exemption misused by this club will be audited by independent federal forensic accountants starting today. And the community outreach programs that were defunded to line Mrs. Sterling's pockets? They will be fully restored by sunset.”

A murmur of nervous agreement rippled through the table. Several board members quickly raised their hands in unanimous approval.

“Meeting adjourned,” Evelyn said.

She stood up, buttoned her blazer, and walked out of the dining hall into the bright morning sunlight flooding the terrace.

Waiting for her by the stone balustrade was Lily, wearing a brand-new pink hoodie, swinging her legs over the edge as she shared a blueberry muffin with Marcus.

“Mommy!” Lily shouted, hopping down and running across the stone pavers to wrap her arms around Evelyn’s waist.

Evelyn knelt down, burying her face in Lily’s golden hair, letting out a long, shuddering breath of pure relief.

“Did we win, Mommy?” Lily asked innocently, looking up with her big blue eyes.

Evelyn smiled, kissing her daughter’s forehead.

“We didn't just win, baby girl,” Evelyn whispered, looking out past the golf course toward the open horizon where a bright, unclouded sun was climbing steadily into the sky. “We’re finally home.”
