Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Confession

The mahogany-paneled boardroom on the top floor of the country club was completely soundproofed, shutting out the murmurs and chaos of the gala below.
Arthur poured two cups of hot tea, sliding one across the polished table toward Evelyn, who sat with Lily curled up fast asleep in her lap, exhausted from the evening's harrowing events.
“I don’t understand,” Evelyn said, her voice shaking as she clutched the warm ceramic mug. “Thomas told me his family disowned him when we got married. He said he was just a common mechanic with no connections.”
“He wasn't disowned by the family, Evelyn; he walked away,” Arthur corrected gently, taking a seat opposite her. “Thomas couldn't stomach the corruption within the Vance corporate empire. He saw how my brother—his father—and people like Beatrice Sterling used philanthropy as a tax shelter while grinding small businesses into dust.”
Arthur opened a heavy leather briefcase resting on the table and pulled out a thick stack of certified legal documents, sliding them across the wood.
“When Thomas passed away, his shares in Vance Global Logistics and several commercial real estate holdings were placed in an irrevocable blind trust,” Arthur continued. “The primary beneficiary? Lily.”
Evelyn stared at the papers, her eyes widening as she read the numerical figures on the trust valuation statement. Millions of dollars. Enough generational wealth to buy and sell the entire country club ten times over.
“Why... why didn’t he tell me?” Evelyn whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. “We were struggling to pay rent last month. I had to sell my mother’s wedding ring just to buy Lily shoes for school.”
“Because Beatrice Sterling and her allies controlled the board of trustees,” Arthur explained, his jaw tightening. “They knew Thomas had drafted a will naming Lily as his sole heir. If you and Lily had surfaced before the legal waiting period expired next month, Beatrice and her co-conspirators planned to legally challenge the will, claiming Thomas was mentally incapacitated when he signed it.”
Evelyn’s blood ran cold. The pieces of the puzzle suddenly clicked together into a terrifying picture.

“That’s why Mrs. Sterling targeted me for this charity event,” Evelyn realized, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “She didn’t just hate me because I was poor. She knew who I was. She invited me here tonight to humiliate me, break my spirit, and drive us out of town before the trust papers were finalized!”
