Chapter 7 - Dawn of Reckoning

The sun rose over the country club golf course, casting a brilliant golden light across the manicured lawns and the white pillars of the clubhouse entrance.
By 8:30 AM, the emergency board of directors meeting had been hastily assembled in the main dining hall. The air was thick with tension, whispers, and the collective shock of the financial disclosures Marcus had uploaded to the board’s secure server network overnight.
Beatrice Sterling pushed open the double doors of the dining hall at 8:55 AM, looking exhausted, her hair slightly disheveled, wrapped in a designer mink coat despite the warm morning air. She still believed she could bully her way back into control.
“What is the meaning of this emergency summons?!” Beatrice barked, marching down the center aisle toward the head table. “If this is about last night’s unfortunate accident, let me remind you all that my family founded this club—!”
She stopped dead in her tracks.
Sitting in the center chair at the head of the table—the seat traditionally reserved for the club president—was Evelyn Vance.
Evelyn was wearing a tailored navy blue designer blazer over a crisp white blouse, her posture immaculate, her expression carved from absolute ice. To her right sat Arthur Vance; to her left sat two federal marshals and the lead state prosecutor.
“Good morning, Beatrice,” Evelyn said, her voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room.
Beatrice’s face turned mottled red. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at Evelyn. “What is she doing in that chair?! Security! Drag this beggar out of here before I—!”
“Security isn’t answering your calls this morning, Mrs. Sterling,” the state prosecutor interrupted smoothly, standing up and sliding a thick manila folder across the table. “Beatrice Sterling, you are being served with a federal arrest warrant for wire fraud, embezzlement, grand larceny, and criminal negligence resulting in workplace endangerment.”
The room erupted. Board members stood up from their chairs, shouting over one another in sheer disbelief.
Beatrice staggered backward, her knees buckling slightly as the federal marshals stepped forward, their heavy hand cuffs clicking against the marble floor.
“No... no, this is a mistake! My accounts! My holdings!” Beatrice screamed, thrashing as the cuffs locked around her wrists. “Arthur! Tell them! This woman is a nobody! She has nothing!”
Arthur Vance stood up slowly, buttoning his suit jacket.

“She isn't a nobody, Beatrice,” Arthur said coldly, looking down at the disgraced socialite. “She is the primary trustee of the Vance estate. And as of eight minutes ago, the Lily Vance Foundation legally owns this country club, your mansion on the hill, and every single cent in your offshore accounts.”
