Chapter 6 - The Midnight Audit

The neon lights of the downtown financial district buzzed against the midnight sky as Evelyn, Arthur, and Marcus stepped out of the black sedan and walked into the glass-and-steel lobby of Sterling Financial Holdings.

The security guards at the front desk scrambled to stand up, recognizing Arthur Vance immediately.

“Mr. Vance! We weren’t expecting—,” the head guard stammered.

“Federal asset preservation order, Jenkins,” Arthur said smoothly, flashing an official legal seal stamped by the state supreme court. “We are here to secure the primary server room under emergency probate guidelines.”

Within ten minutes, the digital vaults of Sterling Financial were wide open. Marcus, who possessed a hidden talent for cyber-forensics that he usually hid behind a waiter’s apron, sat down at the master terminal. His fingers flew across the keyboard with astonishing speed.

“Got it,” Marcus muttered, his eyes reflecting the rapid green lines of scrolling code. “Mrs. Sterling didn’t just route the trust funds through shell companies. She set up an automated transfer protocol scheduled for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM—moving the final two million dollars of Lily’s inheritance directly into an overseas account in Zurich.”

Evelyn leaned over the console, watching the data streams. “Can we block the transfer?”

“Better than that,” Marcus grinned, a mischievous sparkle in his eye. “I can reverse-route the protocol. Instead of sending money to Zurich, the script will automatically siphon every liquid asset, stock option, and real estate holding belonging to Beatrice Sterling directly back into the Lily Vance Foundation.”

“Do it,” Evelyn commanded.

*Enter.*

A soft, melodic chime echoed from the server rack as the automated script executed. Across the screen, green checkmarks lit up one by one.

*ASSET SEIZURE COMPLETE. BALANCE TRANSFERRED.*

Arthur let out a deep, satisfied chuckle, clapping Marcus on the shoulder. “Brilliant work, son. Looks like your days of waiting tables are officially over, unless you want to cook for the Vance household.”

May you like

Marcus beamed. “I’ll take the job, sir. As long as I don’t have to set up any more knife displays.”
