Chapter 4 - The Safe House Sanctuary

Back at The Safe Haven, the morning sun poured through the large bay windows of the sunroom, illuminating a scene of quiet recovery.

Maya sat at the wooden craft table with little Leo, helping him build a towering castle out of wooden blocks. For the first time in months, the toddler was laughing out loud, his small face bright and carefree.

Clara stood by the doorway, watching them with a warm, content smile. The heavy weight of her own past seemed a little lighter today. Healing wasn't just about moving on; sometimes, it was about extending a hand to pull someone else out of the exact same dark waters you had once had to swim through.

The front doorbell chimed gently.

Clara walked down the hall and opened the door to find Marcus Thorne—the same high-priced corporate lawyer who had spent years helping Daniel bully opposing litigants—standing nervously on her porch, holding a sealed envelope.

He wasn't wearing his usual arrogant smirk. Instead, he looked like a man who knew he was standing in front of a firing squad.

"Miss Sterling," Marcus said, his voice unusually polite. "I'm here on behalf of... well, on instructions from our senior partners regarding the injunction."

"You can drop the corporate pleasantries, Marcus," Clara said smoothly, resting her hand against the doorframe. "You have thirty seconds to explain why you're standing on my porch before I call municipal security to escort you off the property."

Marcus swallowed hard, holding out the envelope. "Daniel wants to negotiate. He’s willing to sign the custody agreement without a contested battle. He just wants... he wants the asset freeze lifted before the board of directors notices our operating capital is locked."

Clara looked down at the envelope, then back up at Marcus’s anxious face. A cold, quiet satisfaction bloomed in her chest.

"Tell Daniel he can keep his corporate board meetings," Clara said evenly. "The asset freeze stays in place until every single cent of Maya’s personal savings—which he illegally transferred into his private accounts—is returned to her name. And tell him that if he comes within five miles of this house, my father’s legal team won't just freeze his accounts; they'll dismantle his career brick by brick."

Marcus didn't argue. He gave a sharp, deferential nod, turned on his heel, and hurried down the walkway.
