Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

As Clara settled the young mother—who introduced herself as Maya Brooks—in front of the roaring brick fireplace with a mug of hot chamomile tea, the weight of the night began to settle in. Maya’s three-year-old son, Leo, was fast asleep on the sofa, wrapped in a plush quilt, his breathing finally slow and deep.

"He hasn't slept through the night in six months," Maya whispered, staring down at her tea as her fingers traced the rim of the mug. "Every time a car door slams outside, or footsteps echo in the hallway... he flinches. I tried to leave twice before, Clara. But my husband, Daniel... he controls everything. He’s a partner at one of the biggest corporate law firms in the city. He has judges on his speed dial, police officers in his pocket. He told me that if I ever ran away, he would make sure I never saw my son again."

Clara felt a cold spike of anger flare in her chest. She knew that exact brand of arrogance. She had lived it. The powerful men who believed their money and social standing gave them absolute dominion over the lives of the women they swore to protect.

"Daniel doesn't own you, Maya," Clara said firmly, leaning forward so Maya had to look her in the eye. "And he certainly doesn't own Leo. Tomorrow morning, we're going to bring in Marcus Thorne, our lead legal counsel. We are going to file for an emergency protective order, secure temporary custody, and lock down every digital trace of your location before he even realizes you're gone."

Maya’s eyes welled with tears, but this time, they weren't tears of pure helplessness. They were tears of validation—the first spark of genuine hope she had felt in years.

"How do you know he won't find us?" Maya asked, her voice trembling slightly. "His firm... they have unlimited resources."

Clara stood up, walking over to the window to look out at the dark, quiet street. A faint, knowing smile touched the corners of her lips.

May you like

"Let him look," Clara murmured softly. "My family built this foundation on resources Daniel can't even touch. If he wants a war, we'll give him one."
