Chapter 3 - The Subpoena

The executive offices of Sterling & Brooks Law on the forty-fifth floor of downtown Chicago’s gleaming glass monolith were a monument to corporate excess. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the skyline, and the walls were lined with expensive modern art.

Daniel Brooks sat behind his massive mahogany desk, tapping a silver Montblanc pen against a stack of quarterly billable hours. He was a man accustomed to winning. At thirty-five, he was the youngest senior partner in his firm's history, a charismatic litigator who charmed juries and crushed opposing counsel with ruthless efficiency.

The heavy oak office door swung open without a knock.

Marcus Thorne, Daniel’s senior associate and closest ally, strode into the room, holding an open manila folder with a look of pale, unadulterated panic on his face.

"Daniel, we have a major problem," Marcus said, dropping the folder onto the desk.

Daniel didn't look up from his pen. "If this is about the municipal zoning deposition, settle it out of court. I don't have time for minor administrative blips today. My wife has been missing for thirty-six hours, and I need the private investigators to step up their search before the media starts asking questions about domestic friction."

"It's not about the zoning deposition," Marcus interrupted, his voice tight. "It's about your wife. And it's about Clara Sterling."

Daniel stopped tapping his pen. His head snapped up, his sharp blue eyes narrowing instantly. "Clara Sterling? What does that washed-up heiress have to do with Maya?"

"Everything," Marcus swallowed hard, sliding a legal document across the desk. "Maya walked into The Safe Haven two nights ago. Clara Sterling took her in personally. And an hour ago, our firm's legal department received a formal petition for emergency divorce, full physical custody of Leo, and an immediate restraining order—backed by a federal asset-freezing injunction."

Daniel stared at the document, his breath catching in his throat. The name Sterling Global Holdings was embossed at the top of the letterhead.

"That's impossible," Daniel hissed, standing up so fast his leather executive chair rolled backward and slammed into the wall. "Clara Sterling runs some back-alley charity shelter! She doesn't have the legal firepower to freeze my corporate accounts!"

"Daniel, you didn't check who funds that charity," Marcus said grimly. "Clara Sterling isn't just a charity worker. She’s the daughter of Arthur Sterling—the primary trustee of the Sterling Estate, and the majority stakeholder in the private equity fund that underwrites our firm's primary operating line of credit."

The silence in the grand office became absolute. The high-powered litigator, who believed he was untouchable, suddenly realized he had stepped onto a landmine buried by a woman he had severely underestimated.
