Chapter 7 - The Aftermath in the Valley

By Monday morning, the financial and social earthquake triggered by Arthur’s intervention had completely flattened the Sterling dynasty.
The front page of the San Francisco Chronicle blared terrifying headlines across the Bay Area:
*“Sterling Vineyard Empire Collapses Amid Federal Raids; Patriarch and Heir Arrested on RICO and Embezzlement Charges.”*
*“Local Police Chief Detained in Massive Municipal Corruption Probe Linked to Missing Evidence and Coercion.”*
In a secure federal holding facility thirty miles outside the city, Richard Sterling sat in an orange jumpsuit, staring blankly through the reinforced glass of the interrogation booth at his attorney, who looked pale and shaken.
“What do you mean bail is denied?” Richard demanded, his voice cracking with hysteria. “My father is Charles Sterling! Call the governor! Tell them there’s been a mistake!”
“There is no mistake, Richard,” the attorney said, wiping sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. “The federal prosecutor didn't just file local charges. They unsealed a federal indictment covering interstate wire fraud, tax evasion, and obstruction of justice. And... and the arresting authority wasn't the FBI. It was a classified defense directorate.”
Richard froze, the blood draining from his face. “Defense directorate...? But... but Lily’s father... he was just a retired clerk!”

“Your father-in-law isn't a clerk, Richard,” the lawyer whispered grimly. “According to the restricted federal docket, Commander Arthur Sterling was the primary architect of the military’s global intelligence grid in the nineties. You didn't just bully a housewife. You declared war on a ghost.”
