Chapter 10 - The Unconquered Shield

Arthur didn't panic. He didn't call for backup. He simply typed a single, concise response into the encrypted terminal, locking the transmission back down with a military-grade cryptographic key that would burn any server trying to trace it.
*“I’m right here. Come and find me.”*
He stood up from the desk, walking over to the window that looked out over the quiet, moonlit backyard. The vegetable garden stood tall and orderly in the silver light. The oak trees rustled softly in the midnight breeze.
From the hallway behind him came the soft, rustling sound of footsteps. Lily walked into the study, wrapping a flannel robe tightly around her shoulders, rubbing her eyes sleepily.
“Dad?” she whispered. “Is everything alright? You’re still awake.”
Arthur turned around, the cold, razor-sharp edge vanishing from his eyes instantly, replaced by the warm, gentle warmth of a loving father. He walked over to her, placing a comforting hand on her arm.
“Everything is fine, sweetheart,” Arthur smiled softly, guiding her gently back toward the hallway. “Just tying up some loose paperwork.”
“Try to get some sleep tonight, okay?” Lily smiled, kissing his cheek before heading back to the nursery.
“I will, Lily,” Arthur murmured quietly, watching her disappear down the hall.

He walked back to the window, looking out into the dark horizon where the rest of the world waited. They thought the quiet father living alone was an easy target. They thought the illusion of a retired life meant he had lost his edge.
