Chapter 2 - The Sound of the Past

As Arthur slammed the truck door shut, the heavy, deadened thud echoed strangely across the manicured gravel driveway. He walked around to the passenger side, opening the door to check on Lily. Her eyelids fluttered open, dark shadows bruising the soft skin beneath her eyes.

“Dad...?” she whispered, her voice cracking as she tried to sit up. “You... you shouldn't have come here. Richard said... he said if I left, he’d take my baby away. He had the papers drawn up... everything is signed...”

“Shh, lie still, sweetheart,” Arthur murmured, his voice softening instantly when he spoke to her, a stark contrast to the iron core freezing his blood. He adjusted a flannel blanket over her shoulders. “You’re safe now. Nobody is taking anything from you. And those papers Richard made you sign? They aren't worth the paper they’re printed on anymore.”

Lily stared at him, confusion flickering in her hazy eyes. For her entire life, she had believed her father was a retired government logistics clerk who spent his days tending to a vegetable garden and repairing antique radios. She knew nothing of the classified sector, the black-budget operations, or the ghost dossiers buried deep within the Pentagon's deepest servers under the name Arthur Sterling: Ghost Unit Alpha.

“How... how did you know to come?” Lily asked, wincing as she touched her bruised forehead.

Arthur pulled her phone from his pocket, the screen still dark. “You dropped your phone under the sofa, Lily. But more importantly, it never stopped recording. Every threat Richard made. Every smirk from his mother. Every word of the coercion.”

Lily gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “He... he said if I released the audio, his family would bury me in court. He said Chief Miller would lose the files.”

“Chief Miller is about to lose a lot more than files,” Arthur said coldly, turning his gaze back toward the grand entrance of the mansion.

Heavy, rhythmic thuds vibrated against the pavement. At first, Lily thought it was thunder rolling over the Northern California hills. But the sound grew sharper, heavier, accompanied by the distinct roar of high-powered turbine engines cutting through the afternoon air.

Two matte-black utility helicopters crested the ridgeline, descending rapidly toward the Sterling estate without signaling air traffic control, kicking up a violent storm of dust, grass, and shattered Easter decorations across the front lawn.
