Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

“This... this is insane!” Eleanor Sterling shrieked, marching forward from the rear of the room, her designer silk dress rustling aggressively. She pointed a manicured finger at Arthur’s chest. “You are staging a kidnapping! You brought armed thugs onto private property to steal back our daughter-in-law and interfere with a legally binding marital separation agreement! Miller, do your job! Arrest him right now!”

Chief Miller remained rooted to the spot, sweating profusely, staring down at the tactical operatives blocking every exit. He knew enough about government black ops to recognize the symbol stamped on the operatives’ shoulder patches—a silent, unacknowledged division that answered only to the Department of Defense’s highest directorate. Arresting Arthur Sterling would be like trying to arrest a hurricane with a pair of handcuffs.

“Mrs. Sterling,” Arthur said, turning his cold, piercing gaze toward Eleanor. “You spent thirty years using your husband’s political connections to bully, extort, and bankrupt families who crossed your path in this county. You thought you could do the same to my daughter because you assumed she had no one behind her.”

“She married into our family!” Eleanor spat back, her face twisting with venom. “She had nothing! We elevated her! We gave her a name, a home, a life! And she was ungrateful—she tried to run away with our grandson!”

“She tried to escape an abusive environment where your son routinely used physical intimidation and financial blackmail to keep her trapped,” Arthur corrected calmly. He stepped over a shattered champagne flute. “And speaking of your son’s financial portfolio... let's talk about the papers on this table.”

Arthur picked up the crisp, expensive legal documents Richard had forced Lily to sign just an hour ago. He didn't even bother reading them. He simply tore them down the middle in one smooth, effortless motion, letting the pieces flutter like confetti onto the blood-spotted floor.

“You can’t do that!” Richard yelled, lunging forward as if to grab Arthur’s collar.

A tactical operative stepped into his path instantly, raising the barrel of his carbine just enough to press against Richard’s sternum. Richard gasped, stumbling backward until his knees hit the edge of the dining chair, collapsing heavily into the seat.

“You’re finished, Richard,” Arthur said, leaning down slightly so his face was inches from his son-in-law’s terrified eyes. “Every shell company you set up in the Caymans to hide embezzlement funds from your father’s corporate board? Flagged. Every tax evasion scheme Chief Miller helped you bury in the county municipal records? Copied and uploaded to federal investigators forty minutes ago.”

Richard’s jaw went slack. The arrogant, untouchable heir of the Sterling empire vanished, replaced by a sweating, panicked coward. “How... how could you possibly know about the Caymans? That’s private offshore banking!”

“When you spend twenty years designing global intelligence tracking systems,” Arthur replied smoothly, “finding a local amateur’s tax fraud is about as difficult as reading a children’s book.”
