Chapter 5 - The Corporate Web

Back at the Sterling estate, the house felt both lighter and heavier all at once. Lily was asleep upstairs in her pink canopy bed, exhausted from the emotional trauma of the evening, guarded by two trusted private bodyguards stationed in the hallway.
Mark sat alone in his private study, the amber desk lamp casting long shadows across his face. He pulled open his laptop and accessed the master corporate server, digging deep into the encrypted acquisition files from the past six months.
Harrison Drake—CEO of Drake Logistics and Mark’s fiercest competitor in the national shipping sector. For years, Drake had tried to force a hostile takeover of Sterling Logistics, failing at every turn because Mark held the controlling voting shares.
The puzzle pieces clicked together with brutal clarity. Victoria hadn't just wanted Mark dead out of malice or greed for his personal wealth; she had been planted as a corporate assassin to clear the path for Drake’s hostile takeover. Once Mark was dead, as his fiancée and primary beneficiary of his private estate, Victoria would inherit control of his voting trust—voting shares she would immediately hand over to Drake.
My God, Mark thought, rubbing his temples. It was a multi-million-dollar conspiracy executed under my own roof.
His phone buzzed violently on the desk. It was an incoming call from an unknown, encrypted number.
Mark hesitated for a second, then slid his thumb across the screen to answer.
“Sterling,” he answered sharply.

“You moved too fast, Mark,” a distorted, synthesized voice crackled through the speaker. “Victoria was just an employee. If you want to keep your daughter safe, you’ll drop the charges by morning and sign over the shipping contracts. Otherwise... the next glass won't be wine.”
