Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The dining room of the Sterling estate was a sanctuary of wealth and polished mahogany, bathed in the soft amber glow of antique wall sconces. But tonight, that luxury felt fragile, hovering on the razor’s edge of a catastrophe. The sharp clatter of a silver spoon rolling across the table seemed to echo like a gunshot through the silence.
Mark Sterling stood frozen, his hand just inches from the crystal wineglass, his dark eyes shifting between his six-year-old daughter, Lily, and his fiancée, Victoria, whose face had instantly drained of all color.
“What are you doing, Lily?” Mark asked, his voice tight with confusion and rising tension.
Lily stood on her chair, her small hands trembling as she pointed frantically toward the half-filled glass of vintage Merlot. “Stop! Don't drink that wine, Daddy!”
Victoria immediately lunged forward, her diamond bracelets clinking sharply as she tried to force Lily back down into her seat, her voice pitching into a panicked screech. “Mark, control your brat right now! She’s throwing a tantrum because she hates that I’m here!”
“She’s not throwing a tantrum,” Lily cried out, tears spilling over her lashes. “She put something in your glass!”
Mark yanked his hand back from the wine as if the glass were burning hot. He turned his gaze toward Victoria, his jaw hardening. “Is this true, Victoria?”

Victoria forced a brittle, nervous laugh, though her eyes darted toward the French doors leading to the terrace. “She is lying, Mark! Children have wild imaginations. She probably saw me pouring decanter sediment or checking the cork!”
