Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Bond

One month later, the legal dust had completely settled. The trials of Victoria Laurent and Harrison Drake were swift, resulting in maximum federal sentencing without the possibility of parole. The media frenzy quieted down, leaving the Sterling name restored to its position of honor and integrity.
On a bright, crisp Saturday afternoon, Mark and Lily sat out in the sprawling garden behind the estate. A brand-new wooden swing set stood beneath the old oak tree, and the laughter of children echoed through the air as Lily played with her school friends who had come over for a weekend birthday party.
Mark sat on the wooden porch rocking chair, holding a cup of black coffee, watching his daughter run across the green lawn with absolute, unburdened joy.
He no longer looked over his shoulder. He no longer worried about hidden agendas or corporate spies lurking in the shadows. The poison had been purged from their lives, leaving behind something far stronger and more enduring.
Lily suddenly stopped running, turned toward the porch, and waved frantically with both hands, shouting at the top of her lungs:

Mark smiled—a real, deep, unforced smile—set his coffee mug down on the table, and ran down the porch steps to join his daughter in the sunshine, knowing that no matter what storms tried to cross their path, their home was safe at last.
