Chapter 3 - The Secret of the Whitemoon Throne

The battle in the manor ended as quickly as it had begun, leaving the remaining Shadow-Fang scouts fleeing into the snowy night with their tails between their legs. But Baron Vane had managed to escape, leaving behind a trail of questions that burned hotter than the fire in the hearth.
In the aftermath, Lyra tended to a shallow cut on Rourke’s shoulder with a damp cloth, her hands no longer shaking. She looked up at him, her amber eyes filled with a mix of awe and deep suspicion. "You didn't fight like an ordinary street orphan, Rourke. That wasn't just survival instinct. That was royal blood."
Rourke sat in silence, staring into the flickering flames. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy gold signet ring he had worn around his neck on a leather cord since infancy—the exact crest emblazoned on the marriage pact.
"My parents weren't nobodies," Rourke spoke softly, his voice heavy with ancient pain. "They were slaughtered twenty years ago during the great purge. The empire of predators led by the High Council wiped out the ruling lineage of the Whitemoon Alpha King. Everyone believed the bloodline was entirely eradicated."
Lyra gasped, dropping the cloth. "Whitemoon... You're the true heir to the throne? The throne that the current tyrant usurped in a river of blood?"
"My betrothal to you wasn't a random coincidence arranged by desperate parents," Rourke said, his eyes burning with a fierce, unstoppable determination. "It was an alliance forged centuries ago between our bloodlines to overthrow the very predator empire that butchered my family and enslaved your people. They thought they killed the last Whitemoon. They were wrong."

Lyra stepped closer, placing her warm hand over his cold, calloused fingers. The fear that had defined her life as an orphaned heiress melted away, replaced by an unbreakable bond forged in shared vengeance. "Then we finish what they started. Together."
