Chapter 5 - Reborn in the Blood

The private recovery suite at St. Benedictine Medical Center smelled of antiseptic and quiet exhaustion. The heart monitor beside the bed emitted a steady, rhythmic beep that sounded to Colt like the most beautiful music he had ever heard in his life.

Maya lay propped up against a stack of crisp white pillows. Her face was pale, shadowed by deep circles of fatigue, but her eyes—those steady, unyielding dark eyes—were wide and open, staring directly at the clear plastic bassinet wheeled right up beside her bed.

Inside the bassinet, swaddled tightly in a soft blue-and-white striped blanket, lay a tiny, breathing human being. A miniature fist rested against a tiny cheek, and soft, dark tufts of hair crowned a perfectly round head.

A healthy baby boy.

The door to the private suite clicked open softly.

Maya didn't turn her head immediately, but she knew the heavy, deliberate cadence of those footsteps. She had listened to them echo across the kitchen floors of Aquila restaurant for a year.

Colt walked slowly into the room. He looked different—the sharp, impenetrable armor of the city's most feared mafia boss seemed to have stripped away, leaving behind a man who looked remarkably raw, humbled, and vulnerable. He stopped at the foot of the bed, his broad hands gripping the metal railing as if he needed it to keep himself upright.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The steady beep of the monitor filled the heavy, electric silence between them.

"The doctor said..." Colt started, his voice cracking slightly before he cleared his throat and tried again. "The doctor said you lost too much blood. They said it was a miracle you both made it."

Maya looked at him then. Her gaze was cool, steady, and laden with ten months of accumulated silence and pain. "Miracles don't have much to do with it, Colt. Pure stubbornness does."

Colt closed his eyes for a second, swallowing hard against the tight knot in his throat. He walked slowly around the bed until he was standing right beside her, looking down into the bassinet at the tiny face of his son. The resemblance was undeniable—the shape of the brow, the quiet intensity even in sleep.

"I walked away to protect you," Colt whispered, the confession tearing out of him like jagged glass. "I genuinely believed that keeping you away from my world was the only way to keep you alive. I was arrogant enough to think I knew what was best for you."

"You left because you were a coward, Colt," Maya said, her voice quiet but piercingly sharp, lacking any hesitation. "You hid behind the excuse of your dangerous life because you were terrified of what it meant to genuinely let someone in. You made a unilateral decision for both of us without ever having the courage to ask what I wanted."

Colt didn't flinch. He didn't offer excuses or try to justify his past actions. He took every word like a man accepting his sentence, knowing he deserved every single syllable of her wrath.

"You're right," Colt said softly, looking back up from the bassinet to meet her gaze directly. "I was a coward. And I paid for it every single day. When I saw you on that gurney... when I thought I was losing you both... I realized that all the power, all the money, and all the fear in this city meant absolutely nothing if I didn't have you."

He reached out slowly, his large, calloused hand hovering just above the edge of the mattress, giving her every opportunity to pull away.

Maya looked at his hand for a long, agonizing moment. She saw the raw contrition in his eyes—the absolute, unconditional surrender of a man who had never bowed to anyone in his entire life, kneeling now at the altar of her forgiveness.

Slowly, deliberately, Maya lifted her hand and slid her fingers into his, letting her palm rest flat against his. Her grip was warm, firm, and undeniably real.

"Julian is gone," Colt murmured, his thumb gently stroking the back of her hand. "He's locked away in a federal holding cell facing charges that will guarantee he never sees the light of day again. No one will ever touch you or our son again. I swear it on my life."

Maya looked down at the tiny baby sleeping peacefully in the bassinet, then back up at Colt. A small, faint ghost of a smile touched the corners of her tired lips.

"Our son," she repeated, tasting the words as if they were a brand-new language. "You haven't even held him yet."

Colt's breath hitched. He swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly as he reached down into the bassinet. With infinite, painstaking care—as if handling the most precious, fragile artifact in the universe—he scooped the small bundle up against his broad chest.

The baby shifted sleepily, letting out a tiny, soft sigh before settling right against Colt's heart.

For the first time in thirty-nine years, the most feared man in Chicago felt completely anchored. The cold, violent shadows of his underworld empire melted away in the warmth of the hospital room, replaced by the steady, rhythmic breathing of the woman he loved and the son who would carry his future. He wasn't just a boss anymore. He was a father. And he would burn the entire world to ash before he ever let anything harm them again.
