Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Inner Circle

While Dr. Lena Ortiz fought inside the operating theater to keep Maya and the baby tethered to this world, Colt walked out of the hospital doors into the harsh Chicago sunlight, his face carved from dark, unyielding granite.

His phone was already buzzing in his palm. It was Marcus, his head of security and the most lethal shadow in his organization.

"Boss," Marcus said without preamble. "I got the report from the west side precinct. The paramedics logged the call from an alley off Racine. We pulled private CCTV from the adjacent storefronts. It wasn't a random mugging, Colt. She was targeted."

Colt slid into the back of his waiting bulletproof town car, his voice a lethal whisper. "Show me."

"I'm sending the encrypted feed to your dash screen now," Marcus replied. "Watch the car that pulls up thirty seconds before she collapses."

Colt tapped his screen. The video feed flickered to life, showing a grainy, nighttime alleyway illuminated by a flickering amber streetlamp. Maya stumbled into frame, clutching her swollen stomach, desperately trying to flag down a vehicle. A sleek, late-model black sedan pulled up smoothly beside her. The rear door opened, and a man stepped out—a man whose face was partially obscured by a tailored wool overcoat, but whose posture and specific build were unmistakable.

Colt's breath hitched. He knew that build. He knew that custom Italian wool.

It was Julian Vance—Colt’s own cousin and chief financial officer, a man Colt had trusted with his life, his books, and the deepest secrets of his empire.

"Julian," Colt murmured, the name tasting like ash and poison on his tongue.

"He's been quietly consolidating accounts and selling off secondary properties behind your back for the last six months," Marcus reported grimly. "When we dug deeper into his communications, we found out he discovered Maya's apartment three weeks ago. He figured out she was pregnant with your child, Colt. He saw her as a vulnerability—or worse, an heir who could legally claim a controlling share of your estate if anything happened to you."

The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity. Colt hadn't protected Maya by walking away ten months ago. His absence had left her unprotected, vulnerable to the greed and paranoia of a traitor hiding in plain sight within his own bloodline. Julian hadn't just tried to murder the woman Colt loved; he had tried to erase Colt's entire future.

"Where is Julian right now?" Colt asked, his voice entirely devoid of human emotion.

"He's currently attending an emergency board meeting at the downtown financial tower," Marcus said. "He thinks you're still occupied with Victoria Crane at the hospital."

"He's about to receive a very different kind of meeting," Colt said softly, hanging up the phone.

He didn't scream or slam his fists against the leather upholstery. The rage inside him had condensed into something cold, sharp, and absolute—a surgical instrument designed for one specific purpose: total annihilation.

The town car accelerated sharply into the downtown traffic, heading straight toward the financial district. Julian thought he was smart. He thought he had outmaneuvered the most feared man in Chicago. But he had fundamentally misunderstood the primary law of Colt Vance's world: you can take his money, you can challenge his empire, but the moment you touch what is his, the reckoning is absolute, merciless, and final.
