Chapter 2 - The Vault of Secrets

Colt moved before his conscious mind caught up with his legs. He ignored Victoria's shrill, indignant call of his name as he strode down the hallway toward the trauma wing doors, which had just swung shut with a heavy, final thud.
A burly security guard stepped into his path, raising a hand. "Sir, you can't go back there. Authorized personnel only. Family members need to wait in the—"
Colt didn't break his stride. He didn't yell or threaten; he simply looked the man directly in the eyes with a cold, terrifying stillness that had made veteran cartel enforcers back down in dark alleys. The guard's hand dropped slowly to his side, his throat working convulsively as Colt brushed past him without a word.
Inside the trauma unit, chaos reigned in orderly waves. Doctors were shouting medical terminology, monitors were beeping with frantic, high-pitched urgency, and nurses were rushing back and forth with blood plasma bags. Colt stood frozen just inside the double doors, his chest tightening as if a fist were squeezing his lungs.
"Mr. Vance? What the hell are you doing in here?"
Colt turned sharply. Dr. Lena Ortiz, a brilliant trauma surgeon whom Colt had quietly funded through a major hospital endowment years ago, stood by a supply cart, stripping off her bloody gloves with a grim expression.
"Maya," Colt said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly register that sounded entirely foreign to his own ears. "The woman on that gurney. What happened to her?"
Lena stared at him, her eyes narrowing as she processed his pale face and the frantic tension in his broad shoulders. "She's in emergency obstetric surgery right now, Colt. Placental abruption triggered by severe physical trauma. She lost an immense amount of blood before she got through those doors. We're fighting to save both her and the baby, but frankly, it's touch-and-go."
The word hit Colt like a physical blow to the stomach. Baby.
"Trauma?" Colt stepped closer, grabbing the edge of the supply cart so hard his knuckles turned stark white. "What kind of trauma?"
Lena looked away for a split second, her professional composure cracking slightly. "Severe blunt force trauma to the abdomen, Colt. Multiple contusions. Broken ribs. It looks like she was beaten."
A suffocating, absolute zero settled deep into the marrow of Colt's bones. The air in the sterile hospital room seemed to vanish entirely. The man who never lost control, who never panicked, felt a blind, murderous rage ignite in his chest—a fury so pure and absolute that it threatened to tear him apart from the inside out.
"Who?" Colt whispered, the single word dripping with lethal intent.
"I don't know the details yet," Lena said, lowering her voice. "The paramedics said she was found collapsed in an alley behind a diner on the west side. She was barely conscious when they scooped her up. But Colt... before she went under general anesthesia, she whispered something to the triage nurse. She kept repeating a name over and over again."
Colt's heart hammered against his ribs. "Whose name?"
"Yours," Lena said quietly. "She kept saying, Tell Colt... tell him about the ledger."

Colt stood motionless as the weight of those words settled over him. Ten months ago, he had walked away from Maya to keep her safe from his enemies. He had believed, with arrogant certainty, that cutting her loose was an act of mercy. But standing here, listening to the frantic beeping of surgical monitors through the heavy doors, he realized a devastating, soul-crushing truth: his enemies hadn't reached Maya because of his past. They had reached her because someone close to him—someone within his own inner circle—had betrayed him, tracing his footsteps back to the one person he had ever truly cared about.
And she had been carrying his child the entire time.
