Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Vance

The boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Vance Financial Tower was silent, save for the hum of the centralized climate control and the nervous shuffling of papers. Julian Vance stood at the head of the mahogany conference table, smoothing down the lapels of his expensive charcoal suit, wearing the smug, self-satisfied smile of a man who believed he had just successfully executed a hostile takeover of a criminal empire.

"As you can all see from the revised portfolio projections," Julian announced smoothly to the seated board members, "with Colt currently distracted by personal... family matters at the hospital, restructuring our asset distribution is not just a smart move—it's a financial necessity."

The heavy double doors at the end of the boardroom didn't just open; they slammed inward with a deafening crash that rattled the crystal chandeliers overhead.

Julian’s smug smile vanished instantly.

Colt walked into the room. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, revealing the corded muscle and faint scars of a man who had built his empire with his bare hands before delegating the violence. Behind him marched Marcus and four heavily armed security operatives who fanned out instantly, locking down every exit and cutting off the trembling board members from the doors.

"Julian," Colt said, his voice echoing smoothly across the cavernous room.

Julian swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively as he tried to regain his composure. "C-Colt! What is this? We were just reviewing corporate restructuring documents—"

"Corporate restructuring," Colt repeated, stopping five feet from the head of the table. He pulled a heavy manila folder from under his arm and tossed it across the polished mahogany. It slid right to the edge of Julian's fingertips, the contents spilling out: bank transfers, shell corporation titles, encrypted emails detailing the asset siphon, and high-definition screenshots from the alleyway security camera showing Julian stepping out of his sedan to confront a pregnant Maya.

Julian stared down at the photographs, every drop of color draining rapidly from his face until he looked like a corpse.

"You always were remarkably mediocre at covering your tracks, Julian," Colt said quietly, taking another slow step forward. "You thought you could steal my money. You thought you could eliminate a defenseless woman. And most stupidly of all, you thought you could destroy my bloodline."

"Colt, please!" Julian stammered, his knees buckling slightly as he backed up against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the sprawling Chicago skyline. "It was business! Just business! She was a liability to the organization—"

Before Julian could finish his sentence, Colt crossed the remaining distance with terrifying speed. He grabbed Julian by the lapels of his expensive suit, hoisted him effortlessly off the floor, and slammed him hard against the reinforced glass window, which cracked with a sharp, echoing snap under the impact.

The board members shrieked and scrambled backward in sheer terror.

"Business," Colt whispered right into Julian's ear, his breath cold as winter ice. "You spilled her blood in an alley. You nearly killed my child. That isn't business, Julian. That's a death sentence."

"Don't kill me!" Julian sobbed, tears streaming down his face as he looked down forty stories to the street below. "I'll give you everything back! I'll sign over every cent!"

"Everything you own already belongs to me," Colt said flatly. "And your life ceased being yours the moment you laid a hand on Maya."

Colt didn't throw him through the glass. Death was far too quick, far too clean an exit for a traitor of Julian's magnitude. Instead, with a flick of his wrists, Colt slammed Julian facedown onto the conference table, pinning him there with one heavy hand while Marcus stepped forward with a pair of heavy steel zip-ties.

"Pack him up," Colt ordered, stepping back and straightening his cuffs. "Strip him of every asset, every account, every title, and every legal identity he possesses. When the federal investigators come looking for answers tomorrow morning, hand them the complete dossier on Julian's embezzlement and attempted murder. Let the legal system finish what we started."

As Marcus and his men hauled the screaming, broken man out of the boardroom, Colt stood alone at the head of the table, his chest heaving slightly as he looked out over the city. The empire was secure. The traitor was broken. But the only thing that truly mattered was still sitting in a sterile hospital room on the west side, fighting for every breath.

Without another word, Colt turned on his heel and walked out of the boardroom, leaving the terrified board members in absolute, stunned silence.
