Chapter 9 - The Skyline View

The sun dipped below the Manhattan horizon, painting the evening sky in brilliant shades of violet, burnt orange, and gold.

The penthouse office was quiet. The emergency board meeting was a distant memory, and the crisis had been neutralized with clinical, surgical precision.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out at the glittering sea of city lights stretching out endlessly beneath us.

A soft click sounded behind me as the office door opened, followed by the familiar, measured footsteps of Lorenzo Moretti. He walked up beside me, holding two crystal glasses filled with sparkling water.

He handed one to me.

“To a very successful hostile takeover,” Lorenzo toasted softly, clinking his glass against mine.

“To knowing your balance sheets,” I smiled, taking a sip.

Lorenzo turned slightly, resting his shoulder against the glass partition, his dark eyes fixed on my face. “You know, Maya, when you spilled that tray and stepped between my mother and Vanessa, I thought you were just a brave waitress acting on impulse.”

“And now?” I asked, meeting his gaze without flinching.

“Now, I realize you were the missing piece I didn't know my empire needed,” Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a low, intimate register that made my breath hitch. He reached out, gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His fingers lingered against my cheek, warm and calloused.

“You saved my mother’s dignity,” he murmured, stepping closer until I could feel the heat radiating from his frame. “And today, you secured my company’s future. What else are you going to save me from, Maya?”

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, but for the first time, there was no fear—only an overwhelming, magnetic pull drawing me toward the man who commanded the city, yet looked at me as if I were the only person in the room.
