Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Portfolio

The fallout from the Met Gala incident was swift and brutal. By Monday morning, Arthur Sterling’s law firm had issued a formal public apology distancing themselves from Vanessa, and Chadwick Sterling had publicly announced his separation from her in the Wall Street Journal.

Inside the penthouse suite of Moretti Capital Holdings, however, the atmosphere was all business.

I stood at Lorenzo’s desk, reviewing a series of quarterly asset spreadsheets on my tablet while pouring him a fresh cup of black coffee.

“The European acquisitions are cleared through Swiss regulatory channels,” I reported crisply. “And the real estate trust in Queens is ready for final signature. But there’s one anomaly.”

Lorenzo looked up from his computer screens, narrowing his dark eyes. “What kind of anomaly?”

“A series of shell companies based in the Cayman Islands have been aggressively buying up distressed commercial debt tied to our shipping subsidiary over the last three weeks,” I explained, tapping the screen to bring up the financial flowcharts. “The filings are masked behind anonymous corporate trustees, but the transaction signatures match the legal formatting used by Sterling Holdings.”

Lorenzo stood up slowly, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park. His jaw was clenched tight.

“Arthur Sterling isn't just licking his wounds over a canceled gala,” Lorenzo murmured darkly. “He’s trying to mount a hostile proxy maneuver through third-party debt accumulation.”

“He thinks you’re distracted by the family scandal,” I said, stepping closer to his side. “He’s betting we won't notice the debt aggregation until he holds enough leverage to force a restructuring vote on the board.”

Lorenzo turned his head, looking down at me with an intensity that made the air between us feel suddenly heavy. “You analyzed three years of complex offshore debt structures in less than forty-eight hours?”

“I majored in finance before my father’s medical bills forced me to drop out and take restaurant work,” I reminded him softly.

Lorenzo’s expression softened, the hard, ruthless businessman fading for a fleeting second to reveal a man who carried the heavy burdens of an empire on his shoulders. “There are many things I’m learning about you, Maya Vance, and every single one of them surprises me.”
