The Moretti Legacy / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - The Silence of the Predators

The temperature in the grand ballroom seemed to drop ten degrees.

Vanessa Sterling’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. The color drained from her face so fast she looked like a ghost trapped in silk. The fiancé she had been boasting about—Chadwick Sterling, heir to a massive real estate trust—instantly took two steps backward, physically distancing himself from Vanessa as if her very presence carried a terminal contagion.

Lorenzo Moretti knelt on the polished marble floor, entirely unconcerned with the expensive Italian wool of his trousers, and gently took his mother’s trembling hands into his own.

“Mama,” Lorenzo said, his voice softening just a fraction, though the dark, dangerous edge remained locked in his jaw. “Are you hurt?”

“I’m fine, Lorenzo,” Eleanor Moretti whispered, her voice shaking slightly as she managed a brave, thin smile. “Just a little clumsy with my wine glass.”

Lorenzo stood up slowly. His height was imposing, but it was the sheer, suffocating aura of power radiating from him that commanded the room. He turned his dark, unblinking eyes toward Vanessa.

Vanessa swallowed hard, her knees visibly trembling. “L-Lorenzo... Mr. Moretti! I had no idea she was—she bumped into me! It was an accident, she spilled her drink right on my—!”

“Shut up,” Lorenzo said.

Two words. Spoken without shouting, yet they hit the room like a physical blow. Vanessa snapped her mouth shut, tears of panic pooling in her eyes.

Lorenzo turned his gaze toward the terrified event coordinator, who was hiding behind a marble pillar near the kitchen doors. “Mr. Harrison.”

“Y-Yes, Mr. Moretti?” Harrison stammered, stepping out and trembling violently.

“Who hired this woman?” Lorenzo asked, gesturing dismissively toward Vanessa.

“She wasn’t on the primary invitation list, sir. She was... she was a plus-one of Chadwick Sterling.”

Chadwick turned green. He pushed his way through the paralyzed crowd, holding his hands up in a defensive gesture. “Mr. Moretti! I swear to God, I didn't know—we’re just acquaintances with her family—she doesn't represent my firm—!”

Lorenzo didn’t even look at Chadwick. He kept his eyes locked on Vanessa, whose chest heaved with hysterical terror.

“In my world,” Lorenzo said quietly, taking a slow step toward Vanessa, “respect isn't bought with a designer dress or a borrowed last name. It’s earned through character. You lacked character tonight. Security.”

Four massive men in dark suits materialized from the perimeter of the room.

“Escort Ms. Sterling off the premises,” Lorenzo ordered coldly. “And ensure that every single corporate partnership, investment fund, and real estate lease tied to the Sterling name in Manhattan is reviewed for immediate termination by 9:00 AM tomorrow.”

“No! Lorenzo, please!” Vanessa shrieked as the security guards grabbed her by the arms, dragging her kicking and screaming toward the double doors while her silk gown rustled against the floor.

The ballroom watched in paralyzed silence as the doors slammed shut behind her, sealing her fate.
