Chapter 5 - The Sunrise Over the Empire

Three weeks had passed since the night the Moretti fortress was nearly torn apart from the inside out.

The federal trials had moved with terrifying, unstoppable speed. Julian Cross and his co-conspirators had already accepted plea deals in exchange for testifying against the regional syndicate bosses who had funded the conspiracy, effectively decapitating the rival crime families without a single shot needing to be fired in the streets. Vanessa Moretti was currently awaiting federal sentencing in a maximum-security detention facility, her high society dreams permanently reduced to dust.

The Moretti empire wasn't just surviving; it was flourishing under an era of absolute, unchallenged security.

Out on the expansive stone terrace overlooking the Hudson River, the morning air was crisp, fresh, and filled with the brilliant promise of a new dawn. The sky was painted in breathtaking strokes of amber, violet, and gold, reflecting off the glassy surface of the water below.

I stood leaning against the stone balustrade, wearing a simple cashmere sweater, letting the gentle autumn breeze wash over my face. The heavy armor, the armed guards at every corner, and the constant, suffocating tension of the underground world still existed just beneath the surface—but for the first time, it felt like background noise.

Footsteps crunched softly against the gravel path behind me.

Dante stepped out onto the terrace. He had fully recovered from his injuries, moving with the fluid, powerful grace of an apex predator. He wore a tailored charcoal suit jacket, though he had left his tie off, looking relaxed and completely at peace.

He walked up beside me, resting his hands on the stone railing, looking out toward the sparkling skyline of Manhattan in the distance.

“You’re up early,” Dante said quietly.

“Couldn't sleep,” I replied, turning my head to look at him. “Too much fresh air. I’m not used to it after weeks of staring at computer screens in underground bunkers.”

Dante let out a low, rich chuckle, turning his head to meet my gaze. “You survived a mafia ambush, a corporate conspiracy, and a midnight betrayal by my ex-wife. I think you’ve earned a little fresh air.”

“Only a little?” I raised an eyebrow playfully.

Dante smiled—a warm, genuine, unfiltered smile that he only ever showed when the rest of the world was shut out. He reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind my ear, his fingers brushing softly against my cheek.

“Whatever you want,” Dante murmured, his voice dropping into a warm, intimate register. “Name your price. The empire is yours.”

I looked into his dark, steady eyes, knowing everything we had survived to reach this exact moment. The enemies were gone. The traitors were locked away. And the fortress was finally safe.

“I don't want an empire, Dante,” I whispered, leaning slightly into his touch. “Just keep the coffee coming, and we’ll call it even.”

Dante laughed softly, wrapping his strong arm securely around my waist and pulling me close against his side as we watched the golden sun rise completely over the New York skyline, illuminating a future that belonged entirely to us.
