Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Syndicate’s Enemies

The federal dragnet dropped across New York City with the silent, devastating precision of a military strike.

By sunrise, the financial backbone of the opposition syndicate—and Julian Cross’s high-priced corporate law firm—had been completely dismantled.

It started at 6:00 AM when federal marshals, armed with the ironclad financial ledgers and encrypted communication logs provided directly by Dante’s security network, raided Julian Cross’s luxury penthouse suite on the Upper East Side. Cross was dragged out in handcuffs in his silk pajamas, facing immediate federal indictments for corporate racketeering, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit fraud.

Simultaneously, the state prosecutor's office froze every single offshore account linked to the conspiracy, neutralizing the hostile takeover before it could even begin.

Back inside the Moretti estate, the morning sunlight streamed through the tall stained-glass windows of the executive study, casting warm, golden patterns across the polished oak floor.

Dante sat behind his massive mahogany desk, sipping his morning coffee while reviewing the final asset-recovery reports sent over by Marco. Though his body was still battered from the brutal ambush days ago, his mind was razor-sharp, his dark eyes clear and triumphant.

The door to the study opened quietly, and Marco stepped inside, holding a sleek black tablet.

“Julian Cross is currently sitting in a federal holding cell refusing to speak without a public defender,” Marco reported with a satisfied grin. “And Vanessa’s personal legal team has officially withdrawn from her representation after realizing the extent of the federal evidence against her. She’s looking at twenty years minimum under the RICO act.”

Dante didn't look up from his papers. “Let her rot. A traitor in the house is more dangerous than a hundred enemies at the gates.”

“What about the rival families who backed the play?” Marco asked, his tone turning serious. “Word of the failed takeover is already rippling through the underground. They know we survived. They know we exposed the rats.”

Dante slowly set his coffee cup down, leaning back in his leather chair as a cold, predatory smile touched his lips.

“Let them whisper,” Dante said quietly. “Send word to the council by noon. Tell them the Moretti family isn't just intact—we’re stronger, richer, and more dangerous than we’ve ever been. Anyone who wants to test our borders can come try their luck.”

Marco nodded respectfully, turning on his heel and walking out of the study, leaving Dante alone in the quiet sanctuary of his fortress.

I stood quietly by the doorway, watching him from the threshold. After everything we had been through over the past forty-eight hours—the blood, the gunfire, the harrowing betrayals—seeing him sitting there, entirely unbowed, gave me a strange sense of awe.

Dante raised his head, catching my gaze across the room. The cold, ruthless mafia boss melted away for a brief, fleeting second, replaced by something much warmer, much more human.

“Are you still planning on going home?” Dante asked softly, raising an eyebrow.

I smiled faintly, walking slowly across the room until I stood right beside his desk, resting my hands on the polished wood.

“Given that your perimeter gates are still locked and Marco refuses to give me the biometric code?” I teased lightly. “I suppose I don't have much of a choice.”

Dante reached out, his strong, warm hand catching mine across the desk, pulling me gently closer.

May you like

“You never did,” he whispered.
