Chapter 2 - The Serpent in the House

The digital clock on the wall of the estate’s secure briefing room ticked silently toward 3:30 AM.

The room was dark, illuminated only by the harsh, blue-white glow of multiple monitors displaying financial ledgers, corporate ownership charts, and intercepted communication logs. Dante sat at the head of the conference table, his torso wrapped in tight medical bandages beneath a fresh black shirt, a cold cup of black coffee sitting untouched at his elbow.

Marco stood beside him, while I paced near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the heavily guarded courtyard outside.

“Let’s review the timeline,” Marco said, tapping the touchscreen to pull up a sprawling web of shell corporations and bank routing numbers. “Julian Cross has been Vanessa Moretti’s legal counsel for over three years. But financial audits show that six months ago—right around the time Dante was expanding the shipping docks in Brooklyn—Cross started moving large tranches of capital out of the family’s primary holding accounts into offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands.”

“And Vanessa authorized every single transfer,” Dante said, his voice eerily calm, though his jaw was locked so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. “Using her proxy voting rights as my wife.”

“More than that,” I interjected, turning away from the window to face them. “When I overheard them at Bellini’s, they weren't just talking about embezzling funds. Cross was assuring her that once the federal racketeering indictments hit your desk next week, your assets would be frozen by the DOJ, leaving you completely exposed. Vanessa is planning to file for an emergency divorce, claim you abused and abandoned her, and take seventy percent of the liquidated estate under the pre-nup clauses.”

Marco let out a low whistle. “Damn. That’s not just a hostile corporate takeover. That’s a complete execution—legal, financial, and reputational.”

Dante leaned back in his leather chair, resting his chin on his steepled fingers. His mind was working at lightning speed, calculating every variable, every betrayal, every hidden dagger.

“She always hated the blood on my hands,” Dante said quietly, more to himself than to us. “She loved the name, she loved the diamond necklaces, she loved the penthouse apartments on Fifth Avenue. But she could never stomach the reality of what keeping those things required. So she decided to sell the crown to the highest bidder.”

“What are you going to do?” I asked, stepping closer to the table. “She’s your wife, Dante. In your world, a public scandal like this—a betrayal from within the inner circle—can trigger an all-out war with the rival families who smell blood in the water.”

Dante looked up at me, his dark eyes flashing with a terrifying, unyielding resolve.

“In this world, betrayal has only one currency,” Dante said softly. “And Vanessa is about to find out how bankrupt she really is.”

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the briefing room swung open with a sharp click.

A young security guard stepped inside, looking pale and breathless. “Boss… you need to see this. The front gate intercom just activated. Mrs. Moretti has arrived.”

The room went dead silent.

Dante slowly stood up from his chair, adjusting his cuffs with deliberate, terrifying calm.

“Well,” Dante murmured, a humorless, predatory smirk touching his lips. “Look who decided to come home early from her late-night legal consultation.”

“What’s your play?” Marco asked, resting his hand near his shoulder holster.

“Let her walk right into the lion’s den,” Dante replied, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. “She wanted my empire? I’m going to give her a front-row seat to her own destruction.”
