Chapter 3 - The Midnight Confrontation in the Grand Foyer

The grand foyer of the Moretti estate was a cathedral of wealth and intimidation—vaulted ceilings, polished Italian marble floors that reflected the crystal chandelier overhead, and towering Corinthian columns.

At 4:15 AM, the heavy mahogany double doors swung open, and Vanessa Moretti swept into the house.

She wore an emerald-green silk designer coat over a black evening gown, her blonde hair perfectly styled, her diamond earrings catching the ambient light. She looked like the untouchable queen of New York high society.

Until she closed the door and turned around to find Dante standing at the top of the grand marble staircase, watching her in absolute silence.

Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks. Her breath hitched for a fraction of a second, her green eyes darting quickly across Dante’s bandaged shoulder and the faint dark bruise still lingering along his jawline.

Recovering her composure instantly with practiced aristocratic grace, Vanessa plastered on a look of deep, theatrical concern, hurrying up the steps toward him.

“Dante! My God, what happened to you?!” Vanessa cried out, her voice dripping with artificial panic as she reached out to touch his arm. “Marco called me hours ago saying you were ambushed, but—look at you! You’re bleeding! Who did this to you? We need to call the police immediately!”

Dante didn't flinch. He didn't pull away, but he didn't lean into her touch either. He simply stood there like a towering statue of ice, staring down into her eyes with a gaze so heavy and dead Vanessa’s hand slowly dropped back to her side.

“The police, Vanessa?” Dante asked, his voice low, steady, and dangerously quiet. “Since when do you care about law enforcement involvement in our affairs?”

Vanessa’s expression flickered—a micro-expression of pure, unadulterated panic that she masked with an indignant, defensive frown. She stepped back, folding her arms over her chest.

“What on earth is that supposed to mean? I’m your wife! I’ve been sitting at home worrying sick while you’re out running around in your little underworld wars!”

“Were you worrying sick, Vanessa?” Dante asked, taking one slow, deliberate step down the marble stairs toward her. “Or were you sitting across a white-tablecloth booth at Bellini’s with Julian Cross, discussing how to carve up my corporate assets after the federal indictments drop next week?”

The temperature in the grand foyer plummeted to absolute zero.

The color drained entirely from Vanessa’s face. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. The sophisticated, untouchable queen of Fifth Avenue shattered into a cornered, terrified animal in less than a second.

“I… I don't know what you’re talking about,” Vanessa stammered, her voice cracking slightly as she took another involuntary step backward down the steps. “You’re delusional. You’re concussed from the attack! You’re listening to your paranoid goons—”

“I was listening to every single word you whispered to my guest in the VIP lounge,” I said, stepping out from the shadows of the upper landing, walking slowly down the stairs to stand right beside Dante.

Vanessa’s eyes locked onto me, blazing with sudden, venomous hatred. “You! You little street rat! You’ve poisoned his mind against me! You don't belong in this house!”

“No, Vanessa,” Dante said, his voice thundering through the high-vaulted foyer with the authority of an absolute king. “This is my house. And you are standing in it as a traitor.”

Before Vanessa could scream, Marco stepped out from the library doorway below, holding a thick manila folder and dropping it onto the foyer’s central marble table with a heavy thud.

“All your offshore transfer receipts, signed proxy agreements, and recorded comms with Julian Cross,” Marco said casually, leaning against the railing. “Federal prosecutors are going to love reading these over breakfast.”

Vanessa realized the game was completely, irrevocably over. Her knees wobbled, and she gripped the gilded banister for support, her aristocratic facade reduced to ash.
