Chapter 3 - Lines Blurred in the Dark**

The aftermath of the gala left the Moretti penthouse feeling smaller, quieter, and entirely too intimate. The guests had gone, the music had faded, and the heavy oak doors of the private suite were locked against the outside world.

Emma kicked off her designer heels, letting out a long, exhausted sigh as she dropped onto the plush velvet sofa. “You didn't have to threaten to ruin Camille’s life, you know. A simple ‘shut up’ would have sufficed.”

Luca loosened his black silk tie, walking over to the bar to pour two glasses of bourbon. He handed one to Emma before sitting on the opposite end of the couch. “Camille needed to learn where the boundaries are. Besides, nobody insults the woman standing beside me. Fake relationship or not, rules are rules.”

Emma took a sip of the amber liquid, letting the burn settle her nerves. She looked at Luca—really looked at him—without the armor of his syndicate title or the pressure of a hundred staring eyes. Underneath the cold exterior was a man who carried the crushing weight of a criminal empire, yet had spent the entire evening making sure she felt safe, valued, and untouchable.

“Why did you do it, Luca?” she asked softly. “Really? You could have just told your grandmother the truth after the dinner party. Why drag this out into a public spectacle?”

Luca set his glass down on the coffee table. He turned his body toward her, resting his arm along the back of the sofa. The air between them suddenly felt charged with an undeniable, heavy tension.

“Because for five years, I’ve watched you run this household with brilliance, loyalty, and strength, while I sat across from empty, vapid women who cared about nothing except my last name,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a raw, unfiltered register. “And the moment I finally found a woman who challenged me, matched my wit, and put me in my place... I realized I didn't want a fake girlfriend, Emma. I wanted a real one.”

Emma’s breath hitched. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. The calculated, defensive walls she had built around her heart began to crumble piece by piece.

“This was supposed to be a business arrangement,” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

“Business arrangements don't usually involve me losing sleep wondering if you’re actually going to leave me for a hospitality management job,” Luca replied, closing the distance between them.

When his hand reached out to gently cup her cheek, Emma didn't pull away. Her eyes fluttered closed as his thumb brushed across her cheekbone. The kiss started hesitant, a collision of two worlds that had danced around each other for years, before deepening into something fierce, passionate, and entirely irreversible.

The fake romance was dead. What remained was terrifyingly real.
