Chapter 2 - High Society, High Stakes**

The grand ballroom of the Moretti estate gleamed under ten thousand crystal chandeliers. Sunday family dinner had morphed into an impromptu gala of underworld bosses, political elites, and high-society socialites. Word of Luca Moretti’s mysterious new lover had spread through the city's power corridors faster than a brushfire, and every eye in the room was locked on the grand staircase.

Emma stood at the top of the steps, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She wore a deep emerald velvet gown that hugged her curves with breathtaking elegance, custom-tailored in secret by a designer Luca had quietly dispatched to her apartment the night before. Her hair was swept up in a sophisticated chignon, framing her face with soft, confident grace.

Beside her, Luca offered his arm. His expression was a mask of cold, untouchable mafia authority, but when he looked down at her, his eyes softened with genuine awe.

“You look stunning,” he murmured.

“Shut up and escort me down before I throw up,” Emma hissed back, though she took his arm with practiced poise.

As they descended the staircase, the room fell into a tense, curious hush. Teresa Moretti stood near the front, beaming like a general who had just won a generational war. But standing not far from her was Camille Russo, her face twisted in a mask of bitter, unadulterated venom. Camille had not been invited by the Morettis, but in the mafia underworld, invitations were optional for those with enough leverage to crash a room.

As Luca and Emma reached the floor, Camille pushed past a cluster of elders, her voice cutting sharply through the polite chatter.

“This is an absolute farce,” Camille announced loudly, stopping just feet away from them. She pointed an accusatory finger at Emma. “Everyone here knows who she is! She’s the hired help! She scrubs your floors, pours your scotch, and cleans your study! You’re parading your maid around like a queen just to spite me!”

The room went dead silent. Utter shock rippled through the guests. Several old-guard capos leaned forward, waiting to see how Luca Moretti would handle an insult directed at his arm-candy in public.

Emma felt her cheeks warm, her professional instincts kicking in to shrink away, to apologize, to smooth it over.

Before she could speak, Luca stepped forward.

The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees. The easy, charming demeanor he wore for his grandmother vanished entirely, replaced by the terrifying, ruthless predator who ruled the city's docks and syndicates.

“Camille,” Luca said, his voice dangerously low, carrying across the silent ballroom with the weight of a death sentence. “Let’s establish something right now, so you never make the mistake of repeating it.”

Camille swallowed hard, her bravado faltering under his gaze.

“Emma is an essential part of my life, my home, and now, my heart,” Luca lied with chilling, flawless conviction. “If I ever hear you—or anyone else in this room—disrespect her again, you won't just be uninvited from my home. You will find yourself permanently excised from this city's economy. Am I understood?”

The silence that followed was absolute. Camille turned pale, stammered an incoherent apology, and bolted for the exit doors.

Teresa Moretti smiled, raising her champagne flute in silent toast.

Emma stared up at Luca, her mind spinning. He had just publicly staked his reputation and his syndicate's dignity on a fake relationship.

And terrifyingly, as Luca turned back to her with a gentle, protective smile, Emma realized a horrifying truth: the lines between reality and performance had just burned away completely.
