Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Two months after the night of the instant noodles, the San Bernardino house looked completely different.

I had hired a professional interior designer—not an opportunistic architect recommended by my in-laws, but an independent professional whose contract I personally reviewed and paid for with my own money. We tore down the dark, oppressive wallpaper in the living room, painted the walls a bright, airy coastal white, and converted Hailey’s old guest room into a dedicated arts and crafts studio for Skylar.

My career at the engineering firm had actually improved. Freed from the draining emotional sabotage of a toxic marriage, my productivity soared, and the executive board officially promoted me to Senior Director of Structural Operations, complete with a substantial salary increase and a company car.

I hadn't seen Brandon since the day he sat on the porch with his duffel bag. Our divorce papers were processed via default judgment due to his failure to respond to the financial disclosures without incriminating himself further. He was currently living in a cramped studio apartment downtown, working a low-level sales job he hated, while Gertrude’s legal fees threatened to bankrupt her entirely.
